Immigration is entitled to ask
Therefore, even though they might not ask you how much money you have, you should expect to be asked.

This does NOT mean carrying it all in cash obviously. A recent bank statement is sufficient.

Its sounds like your up to something dodgy with the question you've just asked. Of course immigration have ways of checking stuff out, so if your lying, they're found out & you won't be allowed into New Zealand & your be deported back to your own country.

I thought that the working holiday visa was for the holder to be able to work to pay for their holiday

They will probably just ask you whther you have enough money to support yourself before you find work, and probably saying yes or showing them a bank statement or even just showing them your credit or debit card will do.
