Would voting for the Greens be a waste of a party vote?

My boyfriend told me I would be wasting my vote if I was to vote for Greens because they would just join a coalition with Labour if elected. I cannot stand John Key (he came to speak at my hall of residence and didn't even mention anything about Student Loans to a hall full of 200+ students until he asked about it. And then he told us not to worry about having a debt! Easy for him!) and especially after him comparing himself to Obama!. I think Helen is a bit passed her used by date and she's getting a bit arrogant.

I agree with a lot of the Green's policies. Would it be a waste of a vote? I just wouldn't vote otherwise..

Thanks

Sorry I mean 'until he was asked about it'. He was not going to mention Student Loans to University students...?

Not necessarily Wabby.
The Greens appear to be a bunch of people with their heads in the clouds. (Sue Bradford-yuk, could do with signing up for a course in charm school).
But they have a wider concern for the country than politics, and that is a concern that all the other parties should have too. A concern for the environment, for the future, for the resources, for post-peak oil.
The Greens themselves have said that they don't care if they never get into power or even a power-sharing situation, just so long as they can make the country and other politicians aware of the frailty of the planet. They welcome other parties pinching their policies, it shows that they must be good policies.
But finally, the choice is yours, and you must make it regardless of how other people tell to vote for or not to vote for.
Actually, under MMP, I think I would vote for any party that called itself "None of the Above".
I agree with you about both John Key and Helen Clark, but who does that leave us with. I think Dail Jones may be worth a vote.

Absolutely not, it will not be a wasted vote...Party votes all add up and your vote will count...The Greens stand up for what they believe..only this morning I saw them being interviewed about having all our food products labelled telling us which country our food is from...i.e whether baby powder comes from China! The Greens keep our Governments on track in these areas and stand up for what they believe...Good on them and yes your vote will count!

fred
Nope. It registers 1 more voice for those policies you agree with. The Greens MIGHT win, or Labour might change their policies.

If all the people like your b/f and others that said it would be a wasted vote voted for the greens they would get a lot more votes. vote for who you think would and could do the best for NZ.
the idea of MMP is a coalition goverment has a broaded base of people and ideas so that some policies that arent mainstream can still be discussed.IE greens policies that will benefit all people.

No it wouldn't be a waste. Last election I gave both my votes to the Greens. My sympathies are somewhere near the centre of mass of the Greens, Progressives and the Alliance. A vote for the Alliance would be wasted; they haven't a shitshow of getting a seat because they can't compromise or get on with anybody. So I haven't decided how I'm going to divide my votes between the Progressives and the Greens. I've met Matt Robson and a couple of Green MPs and I like them. As for the Greens or Progressives being just a coalition with Labour, well that's OK. They'll help keep Labour in line. Remember Labour was the party that introduced Rogernomics. They can't be trusted on their own. But voting for any left-of-centre party is better than not voting, especially if you're a student.

a) The Greens will associate with Labour, but that is a good thing, Jean and her team can keep Helen in check to some degree.
b) Keys is too smarmy for me.

I liken Keys to Obama and Helen to Hillary.

I see the spell check today suggest Osama instead. LoL.

Kiwi Pete
One thing to say about the Greens and that is they have made people more aware of the environment however their other policies are as red as a fire engine. That is they follow the Marxist line and want complete control of people's lives.
Yes a vote for the Greens would be a wasted vote.

The green party is just a bunch of hippies who want to use their beliefs on the rest of the country. They all think that criminals should have more rights than the victims. Yes, it is a wasted vote. They are a waste of space.

Can you imagine a conservetve Christain party having the same power as the green party has? There'd be an uproar.

Blue ladies
Unlike the greens and labour, John Key has worked and suceeded in the real world - say that about clarke and cullen............

why worry about your debt? will it help? worry dont help anything, tend to agree with him on that one.
