Foxy Chick

Any advise or suggestions where to go on holiday abroad with a disabled husband and two children (aged5 & 7)?

We are thinking of going on holiday in August possibly to Benidorm. Has anyone got any suggestions, from experience, of hotels or things to do in the area?

We will consider going somewhere different as long as there are not many hills as they will be difficult with the wheelchair

I suggest talking to your travel agents. A bigger resort or hotel of a well known chain should have bisabled access and also at a resort plenty for the children to do. Cities are probably the safest bet for access and sight seeing too.

I hope you have a lovely holiday!

try looking into switzerland, it has beautiful weather, clean air and is very peaceful. sorry about your husband though.

Try Zell am see, Austria two hours from Munich airport. It is a beautiful little village(not the dead boring kind) that is safe and fun for little children and is manageable for a disabled person, there are many restaurants, a huge lake with boats to rent, clubs, shops, two playgrounds.
You could try neue post apartments, not too pricey and they have a handy kitchenette with all cooking equipment for families.
You could also rent a car and go on trips, there are MANY places to visit that is about half an hour to an hour's trip from Zell am see that is interesting for both children and adults and that a disabled person will not have difficulty with.
Hope this helps you out.

My husband works in a hotel in Marbella, I know it is adapted for wheelchair access, and probably most of the hotels in the chain are the same...
here is the website you can look into:

www.playasenator.com

They have 20 odd hotels on the spanish coast from Almeria to Huelva (none near Benidorm I'm afraid), 2 in Madrid and 1 in Barcelona...The one in Barcelona is wheelchair adapted, I know, we stayed there ourselves in february..... Playa Hoteles also have good offers for familiies with children. (Special discounts)

Barcelona is a fantastic city to visit, there are a lot of places with wheelchair access. Including museums, etc. and they have lovely beaches and small villages nearby worth seeing also.

Most cities and towns in Spain have been modernised to simplify and ease wheelchair movement... Street corners have been shaved down to semi-ramps and public buildings have been improved for wheelchair access too (including museums.)

As to Benidorm. I personally don't like it (that is a personal opinion), it is all highrises crammed into a small town, as you pass it on the highway all you see is the overly-tall buildings, you can't even see the beach!
There IS a theme park called "Terra Mitica" nearby...your kids would surely enjoy that.. And near Barcelona you have "Port Aventura" Universal Studios theme Park..
If you visit the Costa del Sol (where we live) You have "Selwo" Park, which is a wild animal reserve park, kids usually love visiting that, (it is also wheelchair friendly) and we also have Tivoli Amusement Park, it is not as big as the others on the eastern coast, but kids still have fun and enjoy the rides. There are also 2 Aquaparks near us.
I hope this has been of help...
Have a good holiday!

i think the best thing to do is go and see your travel agent, you can go anywhere you fancy because most places have disabled facilities now,
good luck!

benidorm is the best place for disabled people just tell your travel agent to get you the best hotel or apartment for your situation, you can also rent electric wheelchairs over there.

If you want to go to Spain, then I suggest Mojacar, which is on the coast of Almeria. There are several very good hotels that could accomodate your husbands needs, but I suggest the Marina Hotel. This was built just 2 years ago, and has every facilty possible, especially for the children. They have a games room, kids club, daily entertainment, three swimming pools, restraunt, TV rooms etc. The hotel is also situated just 5 minutes from the beach, and has a wide cycle path running the full length of the sea front ( about 2 miles). Most of the bars are English, and with a few exceptions have wheelchair access and disabled toilets. Flights from UK are either into Alicante (about 2 hours drive) or Almeria ( just 45 minutes) if you log onto the following site you will find out lots more about the area

Happy holiday
