Cambrils & Salou are next to each other, but are like chalk and cheese. Salou is very much an international resort for a beach holiday with loads of bars, discos etc.
Cambrils is much quieter. It's not much more than a fairly sleepy fishing town. It's very popular with the Spanish who want to holiday in their own country, but not be in the middle of all the foreign sunseekers. Its main industry is fishing - you can sit there in the late afternoon and watch all the catches being landed.
I would describe Salou as 'very active' and Cambrils as 'quaint and charming.'

As for getting to Barcelona; it's about 80 miles away. Salou has a railway station from which there are direct trains to Barcelona.

Have fun when you go. Just be prepared for one or two stifling days if you're going in July or August - Salou's a little sun-trap!

Yeah! Great ! Go! much fun ! yes you can get to Barcelona
by bus, train, car, etc..., and you must visit Barcelona, this is the best city in Europe after Antwerp ( Belgium) and Paris (France) Enjoy it and send me a postcard

Not recently but when I went the Salou area was still developing. You can get direct trains to Barcelona a great city to spend some time in.

Went for a look around and to the market there when I stayed in La Pindea.
There's lots of Yachts moored in the harbour and it looked quite nice and much quieter then it's noisy neighbour salou.
Here's some reviews on the place for you.
