You will find everything down La Ramblas, spend some time there, every day is different. Bars, Tapas, Market, shops and loads of street performers, artists, caricatures etc etc

If you like music do the following:
Visit the Palace de Music
Go to Montjuic at 9pm any evening for FREE water (fountains), music and lights show. Magnifique !!!

My main tip is to watch out for pick pockets - someone stole my camera which was clipped onto my belt!

Barcelona is a truly international city. I agree with the other poster. La Rambas is a must. Stroll from one end to the other several times throughout the day- it changes all the time! Just off La Ramblas is a huge covered market which is also well worth a visit.

Everyone says the Gaudi building is amazing. Well - I think that being quite odd doesn't necessarilly equal great! If the general assembly of the united nations was given a supersize grey lego set and locked In a very big room for 100 years the result would I suspect be quite similer. If you travel in Spain the mosque in Cordoba or the cathedral in Salamanca have far more to recomend them. As Gaudi was run over by a tram in the '20s (I think) what now stands is a result of compromise and guesswork. Go to the cathedrals in Salisbury or Cologn and you will be filled up with the power of the buildings. I didn't go but I suspect I would have found barcelonas museum of erotica more uplifting!

Have a great time. - Dolcimer Codfish.

Make sure you go to Casa Quimet (the Guitar Bar) where 200 guitars hanging from the ceiling!

Visit all the Gaudi monuments, they alone are worth the trip.

Watch out for pickpockets, especially in lifts near the main bus station, they work in teams of three or four, and lure people into the lift, one plays with the buttons ('oops, sorry, wrong floor!') while one of them goes through the nearest bags. I nearly lost my wallet out of my belt bag this way. Only I caught the girl doing it and took it back.

Definitely check out the area around the castle, all these great mediaeval streets.

The seafront is good too.

Bring good shoes for walking, you'll need them.

I live in Barcelona, so can offer you a few tips, sure.

Firstly, on the first Sunday of every month, a lot of the museums are free to visit. More info on what else to do cheaply can be found here http://www.barcelonaexplore.com/barcelonaforfree.html

Be SO careful of pickpockets, as mentioned by another poster. People come here knowing that they have to be careful, but without being aware of HOW careful they need to be. I have seen a few people get their bag snatched and many others who after going to an internet cafe they realize they are without their phone and wallet. The pickpockets here are PROFESSIONALS.

Also, it is now illegal to drink on the streets of barcelona. The police are not friendly and are all too willing to stop and charge tourists who drink on the streets.

Some must see spots are here http://www.barcelonaexplore.com/attractionsinbarcelona.html

Oh, and avoid the beach at the weekend, it's packed! And when you go, catch the metro to Poble Nou and walk to the beach Mar Bella. It's nicer, cleaner and quieter. More info. here http://www.barcelonaexplore.com/whatdotoinbarcelona.html

Have a nice trip*

Staying in an apartment instead of a hotel is a better way to go. You live independently and could cook for yourself.

I went for a month and I stayed at the Gracia 2 Apartment was ideal! Apartment with deluxe equipment (TV, DVD, Broadband Internet!!...) and it was/is very tastefully decorated.
The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, the kitchen was stocked with pretty much everything I needed to set up housekeeping for my one month visit, and all of the apartment gadgets worked perfectly.

I would sincerely like to recommend http://www.vivebarcelona.com/ for all their high quality service with the booking and also during my stay everybody was so helpful. I would definitely book with them again if i ever get the chance to visit Barcelona again (hopefully soon).

Hope this helps!
