Anybody else had Problems in Andulucia?

Was thinking of taking a holiday this year in Spain Costa del Sol .But have learnt just recently that There is massive crime over there with muggings topping the list ,at gunpoint,Or knifes.I heard from a colleague at work that a couple of his friendson 2 seperate occasions were followed after withdrawing money from a cashpoint machine and being followed where they were pushed to the floor and mugged!!
And from somebody else a common scam your credit card being put through the machine twice,And nothing can be done once home.Unbelievable.Think i might be staying in the uk this year with the Family..Have anybody else had any problems with this notorious area.????
Additional Details
Obviously the only negative comments come from those who live there,I lived there for around 5 months and saw this with my own eyes.Maybe things have improved with the recession???

I have lived in the south of Spain for 15 years and I have to admit that I do see a change esp. in attacks on foreginers. I have lived in Seville , Puerto, Cadiz, Jerez and I always warn my friends to be careful.
I myself was mugged getting out of a taxi at Sevile airport ( 8 years ago) and had my bag stolen in Santa Justa ( 5 years ago).
I actualy believe that this new Residencia ( paper no ID card) has a lot to answer for. Most of us have ID cards but as we all know they are only valid for 5 years and now we are simply given a piece of paper which is USELESS. Most banks , supermarkets all require photo ID so poeple are now foreced to carry passports which are valuable on the blackmarket.
As for the credit cards I only ever take money out in banks during their open hours and always one with a camera. I never let a shop assistant take my card out of my sight and I always insist on placing the card reader in front of me never on their side. I actually think the recession is aiding the rise in crime.
Foregners are seen as easy legitimate targets esp since we're all rich!! We won't notice the loss but I earn Spanish wages not UK wages!!

zzcap2000
crime is evrywhere, you have more of a chance of getting mugged at home than in Spain.
Just come back from Tenerife the only suspisus person i saw was the wife.

What a load of nonsense!
Crime happens everywhere.
I have been living here for 8 years and have not experienced any!
Probably best you stay in the safe UK where there is no crime...lol

I've lived on the Costa Del Sol, Andalucia for 4 years and I've never heard of that. The crime rate here is way below the UK. I should know that because I'm from the UK.
As for a common scam about credit cards. I've never come across that either.
It's funny, but you only ever hear people say they heard it from a friend.

Jane S
I was in Sevilla two years ago...Not a problem.

I wouldn't waste my time on the Costa del Sol, though...but we DID have a pickpocket incident in Barcelona...big city...to be expected. I haven't heard ANYTHING about violent crimes against typical tourists.

*edit* "Obviously the only negative comments come from those who live there,I lived there for around 5 months and saw this with my own eyes.Maybe things have improved with the recession???"

Actually, reading through the answers, all the people who LIVE there are answering that it is pretty safe. I happen to know which of the answerers do, and THEY say it's safer than the rest of Europe...Why would you say they are the ones with negative comments?

*I* think that you are going to believe what YOU want to believe, and in that case, you probably wouldn't have a good time there...you should go someplace where you feel safer...

BTW...lol on the comment about "the wife" being the only suspicious person!

what a load of b####locks

I dont think you need to worry too much. Spain has 1 of lowest crime rates in Europe.

Adam M
Yes, Andalusia is a very bad place, come to Catalunya instead, with is safer, except some parts of Barcelona.

What a load of rubbish I have been here 27 years crime rate here is nothing compered with England I can walk the streets here without worrying about being attacked any time .. evening and daytime and I am 85 years old.

Just a few lines from the daughter of this lady....I am not at all worried about my mother being robbed/mugged.....just look at what happens in the UK, couple attacked in their own beds no less for a few pounds, this is most unlikely here......
She can at least walk down the road with out fear, unlike her old friends from Luton who must barricade themselves in at 5 in the evenings because of all the troubles where they live

-_- Just like anywhere... for example if you lived in a ghetto but didn't walk around with a knive selling drugs what do you think your chances of being stabbed would be ? almost none...

and as for your credit card... if your so stupid that you give it too them... then you deserve to be scammed...

in any country now (at least all E.U one's) it is the Chip y Pin... You must rember you pin number to use the card in the machines... no signing with your signature - if you're that worried spend on a credit-card you can claim it all back if something does go wrong

I don't live there, I live in Navarra... but my Cousin live's in AlmerĂa... they can go out and leave their door's unlocked... the only crime that does come into their town is from tourists and sometimes Romanian... -_- but never mugging... something like Pick-pocketing and house theift in Summer... or drunk fights from British people

I go to the Costa del Sol at least 5 times per year and have been going every year since 1997. I have never experienced any crime at all against me.

Jst take the same senmsibleprecautions that you would at home. Don't go to rough areas in the early hours of the morning, go drinking in sensible places, don't get blind drunk and make yourself a target.

I've found the area to be safer than where I live in the UK. Please don'tlisten to horror stories. There are criminals in Spain just like there are everywhere but by being sensible you can avoid their attention. In my experience Brits get blind drunk and leave their brains at home when they go on holiday and this naturally attract the attention of criminals, just as it would iin any Town in the World.

Go on holiday and enjoy the culture and sun!

Sali
Which area you are talking about, Costa del Sol specially Mijas (Riviera) and Marbella are very safe and it is a lovely holiday.

There is a lovely resort in Riviera Called Miraflores Hills to rent an apartment visit www.marbellaeye.com and see holiday rentals you will never regret it.
