You will have a fantastic time.
If there are 6 of you it's probably worth getting an apartment instead of hotel/hostel, so you can stock up with beer/food at the supermarket or market and be a bit more independent. This site is pretty good: http://www.oh-barcelona.com and try the Borne (for the cool bars and restaurants) or Barceloneta (by the beach) as locations. The Gotico can also be OK depending on what you are after.
I highly recommend getting the Time Out guide to Barcelona as it is regularly updated and is excellent.
Avoid the Ramblas as it is a tourist trap rip-off. Well, it's worth walking the length of it at least once (Placa Catalunya to the sea) for a laugh but don't eat and drink there. While Barcelona has very little violent crime for a city this size, there is a lot of pick-pocketing in touristy areas so do be careful with your stuff - no wallets in back pockets, bags on floor etc and you will be fine.
For good seafood and paella try the Barceloneta - the Paseo Joan de Borbon has loads of restaurants with a wide variety of prices and atmospheres so for sure you will find something that suits you. Also between March and October there are 'Chiringuitos' or beach bars all along the beach that serve food and drinks and are great for having a few cold ones while watching the world go by (they are slightly more expensive than a 'regular' bar but they ARE on the beach!!)
If you want party madness then head for Vila Olimpica where there are tonnes of bars and restaurants but this IS quite a touristy crowd. For more 'authentic' Barcelona stick to the Borne and the Eixample.
If you are into shopping then the area between the Ramblas and Via Laietana is your stomping ground, and the Paseo de Gracia for the more upmarket side of things.
If you do one touristy thing then make it the Sagrada Familia: http://www.sagradafamilia.cat/sf-eng/index.php. If you do two, then try the Pedrera or Parc Guell.
This site has lots of city information and a searchable map:

Barcelona city centre is pretty compact and the metro is easy to use. Get a T-10 ticket each - this can be used on all public transport. It includes 10 journeys and if you transfer (for example bus to metro) within 75 minutes of punching the ticket then the second part of the journey is free (you still have to punch the ticket but it doesn't remove a credit). Taxis are cheap and easy - green light means its free. They are very strict about only taking 4 passengers though so for taxi rides you'll need 2). |

Yes! Barcelona is awesome! The shops are open late (like 8) every night! And there's lots to see and do. Although Im not too sure about the night life, clubs etc. |

Went to Barcelona in May, it was bloody expensive and the food was crap, not a decent paella in site. It is just like London but bigger and alot more expensive.
You will have to get the tourist bus or find your way around by tube cos it's seriously a big place, you cant walk from site to site.
There are alot of Irish bars which i thought would be a good craic but they were a rip off, 10 euros for 2 bottles of beer. And on the rambles got 2 takeaway cheese sandwiches and 2 small cans of beer and that was 17 euros. 4 days there cost us a few hundred in spending money.
Personally i think its a rip off and too big to enjoy properly, you'd be better going to a smaller city, where you don't have the stress of finding your way around too much and can really kick back and relax. Maybe the spanish coast or a european city like amsterdam, or somewhere in germany.
Me and my girlfriend went to Budapest last November, and it was amazing, i would pick it over Barca any day. Easy to get around, lots to see, sooooooo cheap, great people, good vibe, and you can go and relax in one of the many natural thermal spas, which is such a bonus. It is well worth a look, honest. Believe me ive been to both and its buda over barca with out a doubt. |
