Anyone from Spain or who knows a lot about the culture of Spain? |
I have heard that in some European countries, such as Spain, when a person asks another to come visit them the person being asked feels a certain obligation to do it. Like maybe it is a bigger deal than it is here. Also, I am planning on sending my friend in Spain a gift, but I don't expect her to send me anything back (shipping is really expensive). I don't want her to feel like she has to. Is it a bad idea to send her and her family a gift? |

I'd say go ahead & give a gift if you want to & just say you really don't want anything in return. As for visiting, staying at someone's house in Spain is a big deal--if they invite you, they really consider you almost family. But there is no obligation if they ask you & you can't come. (I've been asking some friends from Spain to visit for years & they just can't swing it financially.) |

I don't know about obligation to say yes, but if someone invites you into their home, it means you are very important to them. They do much more of their socializing "en las calles", or out at bars and cafés. To be invited into someone's home is an honor.
Don't know about the gift giving thing. If you send them something, they are likely to send you something. I don't know if that's such a bad thing.
Ask for some of that coffee...torrefacto...you can send it to me! :) |

My Spanish friends don't expect gifts, they just enjoy people who visit. We all give small gifts from time to time here, but nothing materialistic. Usually something we have made or something out of the garden. |

If you send a gift, and it is NOT a birthday or something... then try and send it on one of your National Holidays... say...
This is the 4th of July in the USA we celebrate with Fireworks... apple pie... and American Flags, then send her a gift for that holiday... maybe something in Red White and Blue.
Then she won't feel as she has to send a gift again until your Birthday, or a National Holiday here.
Umm...s about the going to visit, I don't understand. if your friend or family asks come and see me for the week-end you would, just to be polite
But generally... if someone doesn't think of you but you've bought them a gift or invted them to your house, the "debt" will be returned |

Policea... being a hero isn't what it's cracked up to be anymore, you put your life on the line. No one really appreciates you enough for it. |
