Andalucía is famous for it's "pueblos blancos" the white towns found in the sierra de Grazalema, and la Serranía de Ronda the Alcornocales. These beutiful towns glow white in the Andalucían sunshine and are generally quite unspoilt, mainly due to the fact that many can only be accesed by mountain roads.

Rural artquitecure in Spain varies alot, from province to province, mainly due to climate (which varies drastically from one region to the next) and the building materials traditionally available.

For example the Sierra Norte de Madrid (also known as la Sierra Pobre) is famous for the pueblos de tejera negra - where buildings are build from the dark stone found in this Sierra.

It's mostly Andalucía...because of the heat...the whitewash reflects the extreme heat of the sun.

sandy brown for the most part, in other areas.

Many houses in rural Spain, particularly in the north, are made of mudbrick (adobe) so are clay coloured to dark brown. White houses are generally found in the hotter parts of Spain, especially Andalucia, but also in the coastal regions.

I live in Andalucia and my house is white inside and out. It reflects the heat. It is also very easy to maintain. Andalucia i famous for the pueblos blancos, but many other parts of spain along the coast have white houses.
There is a pueblo blanco called Frigilana which is close to Nerja east of Malaga. The residents paint their houses each year. Frigilana is reckoned to be one of the most beautiful villages in Andalucia and I would concur to that. I live not far away.

Yes white to reflect heat... I actually live in a White home... but the bricks my home was built with is white... I live in North Spain...
but most home's here are built with dark brick/rocks
