don't lie

The people in Spain may not be the richest in the world in terms of wealth, but they are not poor in terms of quality of life. They are wealthier in that respect than the rest of Europe.

Spain has a population of some 45 million.

At the moment over 15% of the workforce is unemployed.

A high % of people live month to month and many have problems meeting mortgage payments etc.

There are affluent people in every country, also in Spain.

Whilst many people in a financial sense may be poor, and not able to afford luxuries like a nice holiday or a fancy car or designer clothes, they are on the most part very resilient and know very well how to enjoy and make the most of what they do have.

Why would we lie???

This depends on your version of "poor people".
Yes, of course there are plenty of poor people here, the same as in the UK or anywhere else. We do not see many beggars on the streets as we did when we first came here over 20 years ago when you used to see gypsy women with maybe 2 kids and breast feeding another making the eldest (probably around 4) beg with a basket or bowl and if they fell asleep they used to get kicked whilst the woman cared for the baby like it was their only lovely longed for child!! Nowadays most that are begging now are not Spanish.
But people below the poverty line are the world over sad to say, and Spain is no different.

btw - Xabier must live in a different Spain to me, when he says no there are none! Or he must be very lucky to live somewhere where he never sees them.
