I'm partial to Barcelona, but I lived there so I know where to go better. They're both nice. Barcelona is more cosmopolitan, so more people will speak English. There are more tourists there and the related nightlife. Madrid is more Spanish, has better museums and parks. Barcelona has Gaudi's architecture, beaches (still decent weather for this), and everything mentioned here:

I would choose Barcelona, as it's a bit more carefree (although I live here, so I'm maybe biased!) and lots more fun than Madrid for going out - easier to get around, too. There are loads of festivals (even small ones) going on, but I think Barcelona wins for culture - 9 UNESCO world Heritage sites, and Madrid can't say that. You migh not be thinking that you'll be up for that knid of thing, but they are all so impressive and something you could leasurely do on the tourist bus, for example.

Barcelona! Barcelona is always a good idea for anything you want to do! People are great there, city itself is one of the most beautiful ones in the world, great architecture, shops are great, clubs, beaches, etc.. Madrid isn't that fun believe me. I've been to Barcelona and Madrid as well, but well anyone who has travelled there would tell afree with me, that Barcelona outstands Madrid.
Have fun (I'm sure you will) |

Check with Madridman.com and barcelonaman.com. They should have any information on festivals.
I think, if you want warmer weather, as things are beginning to turn, Barcelona might be nicer, just because it's starting to get cooler in Madrid.
Personally, if I had to choose, I'd probably go with Madrid, though. If you haven't been, there are some pretty great side trips from there, that are sort of must sees.
The side trips from Barcelona, I would describe more as advanced traveler trips...for those who have already done the must sees, and want to delve deeper. |

Madrid is beautiful. Cafe's in Madrid are some of the oldrest and fun to dine in. BotĂn - the oldest in the world, is in Madrid-1725, the building dates from 1590. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any festivities going on in Madrid right now. It is still a wonderful city to see. |

Engineer said she was terrible with names. You mean GAUDI not EL GRECO!!!!!!!!.
I would definitely choose Madrid if you want a feel for the real Spain. Barcelona is nice if you want to feel like you are in any other big city in the world.
If you want to experience Spain, particularly Castillian Spain, then Madrid is where you want to go. Barcelona is just like all the rest! |

I recommend Madrid, but it kind of depends on what you like. Do you like more traditional architecture? I liked the architecture in Madrid way more than in Barcelona. Barcelona's main influence when it came to architecture was El Greco and he likes to build what seem to me to be cartoon villages. It sort of looks like Toonland in Disneyland.
Madrid is more traditional and has super-luxurious buildings. I really liked El Palacio Real (the royal palace). They let you tour an entire wing that hasn't been changed much for centuries and I really enjoyed it. I felt like a princess in a castle. I honestly didn't think that people had really lived in places like that until touring the palace. Also, El Prado has great art and Madrid has a great atmosphere in my opinion. People seem happy and care-free in the city squares and parks.
Barcelona seemed a bit more modern. I'm horrible with names, but there is a street there that you can walk up and down that has all sorts of crazy people on it. If you enjoy people watching, then it might be the place for you. They also have a mall that is out on the water that is kind of interesting.
Anyway, I would say Barcelona is "New Age" and Madrid is traditional so pick your preference. |
