Two great cities.
I will choose Barcelona. Is the most cosmopolitan city in Spain with a lot to see, do and eat. If your are 14 don't miss the Tibidabo Amusement Park in the top of a mountain with the best views to the city. Take the touristic buses and visit the principal attractions especially La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera (Casa Milla), Parque Guell, the Spanish Town, la Rambla, The Barrio Gotico, the water front with aquarium and Montduic with the Olympic City. I also like the Zoo is very relaxing.
Nerveless Valencia is also a city to visit. Right now the America's Cup sailing race is underway on the port. The City reconstruct the area for the event. The City of the Arts and Science deserves a day of your visit. The place is modern acropolis with the largest aquarium in Europe and extraordinary buildings by the architects Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela. Don't miss the eye shape Imax theater. The old city is also great with the Cathedral and the Mercado building, one of the principals in Spain. If you like the sun the Malvarrosa beach is the place. Remember to check La Fiesta de las Fallas. The city will be very crowded at that time.

Barcelona has loads to do.

Valencia is just a provincial Capital; Barcelona is one of the most exciting cities to visit in the world.

Buy the 'Time Out ' guide to BCN. (I have no connection. It is just the best although it has publicised many of my fav places so I really hate it!)

For a clean beach, take the train to Sitges.

p.s. Make sure your dad takes his credit card. Spain is great for clothes shopping for people your age. (August has sales)

The streets of Barcelona are alive by day or night, providing the visitor with a safe place for strolling around, whether for shopping, eating or simply passing the time of day. There is also 1 mile long city beach with clean soft sand, ideal for sun bathing.

I'd say Barcelona, because there's not many better cities in the world than Barca. Art, history, food, the people, it has it all. Valencia is cool though, and the America's Cup being there might be something special to see. It's a tough choice.

Try both! Make Barcelona your base first and explore it. Valencia is just 4 hours to the south (by bus or train).

Valencia is worth it for a day and a nights stay. The beaches are much nicer there. Depending when you go, the Americas Cup is on till mid July.

Get a good guide book and decide with your dad what you like to see and do. Then plan your trip. A week is plenty of time to explore both cities. (try the books Lonely Planet or Rough Guide)
