I have been to Menorca twice and would say that anywhere is suitable for a young family. The first time we went to Santo Tomas, which is a very small village but has a lovely beach and is very child friendly. The secong time went to Arenal D'en Castell, which at the time I said if ever i have kids i will bring them here. It was really clean and had a lovely shopping area and a beautiful sandy beach, although there are steps leading down to it. I am sure you could bypass the steps if you didn't mind walking a bit further. We stayed at the Castell Playa hotel, which ssadly no longer accepts children but most around there have kids clubs so could keep them occupied with activities, although I personally would not use them, i would rather spend the time with the family. If you hire a car, you can see most of the island in day and well worth it too. Have a great time.
Edit: if you take Jimbo's advice be careful you don't end up on the nudist beach at Son Bou.

buggerlugs
we stayed in arenal castell vey quiet and lovely beach too

we stayed at the sanjaime complex in son bou and it was lovely all three of our children 3,4,11 thoroughly enjoyed it. the apartments are lovely and clean and there is such large area of grass between the apartments for the children to let off steam.the evening entertainment finishes about 11.15 pm evry night which may be early for some but when you have excited todlers wanting to be at the beach at the crack of dawn we found that late enough!the gardens are beautiful and the colour of the sea is just like mexico (not that we've been!)we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will return again somtime.the actual resort area is quite small but there are buses to the capital mahon from which .you can go all over the island.we felt very safe and relaxed here a very friendly place.

The best beach we found was in Son Bou, that was self catering. There was lots of things for the kids to do ( play areas, trampolines)This year we are trying Canutells along the same coast line. All inclusive
