Best place to live in Spain? |
Hi there, I'm considering moving to Spain in a year or two with my husband. Can anyone with some experience living in Spain give me some information as to which would be one of the best cities to live in? I would like to live somewhere that's low in crime, clean, and inexpensive with a good nightlife and interesting culture. I know that seems like alot to ask but I'm sure at least one of you travelers out there will know a good spot. Thanks for your help. :)
Additional Details yea soc jo im american :) theres plenty of crime here lol. its bad. |

Being American...you need to be concerned about work visas, and what you intend to do for a living...Right now, the work situation is very bad for foreigners. Not likely to pick up too much in a year or two. If you can have a job before you leave the US, you will do better!
Good luck! (I might avoid Barcelona, if you want to avoid crime, but, see, the big crime there is pickpocketing...you never see the criminal...not likely to have much trouble with physical crimes, etc.)
I would suggest Sevilla. (personal favorite) or Granada...if you stay away from where all the gypsies are hawking their rosemary branches...Madrid is nice, if you stay away from the tourist spots after dark. (I hear the Plaza Mayor, nighttimes, in the summer...not very safe).
Good nightlife? You'll find that anywhere in Spain, and interesting culture? Well, it isn't the US, so there would be interesting culture anywhere, too.
People are suggesting the north: Oviedo, Santander, San Sebastián, and Bilbao. All worth looking into. |

AndalucÃa is the best part in my opinion
(especially Málaga lol, i live there)
-Nerja is very beautiful and still is quite traditional, but modern at the same time
if you dont know spanish, your best bet is moving to andalucia coast (costa del sol) due to the fact that there is alot of english, scandanavian etc that live there so there is more english spoken!!
bye!!

can i discover a new place for you??? EXTREMADURA
no many foreigners around as we live inland, but gets pretty busy in summer, xmas, holidays in general by spanish people looking for a natural, quite place but full of history and life (including night life!) its also less expensive than the north of spain and some other bigger cities (madrid, barcelona, sevilla...) crime doesnt exist over here and its clean and green! (north extremadura greener than south extremadura) good food too!!!
i live in Caceres exactly and its the only city in Europe with a whole preserved Medieval town in its centre...i guess it deserves a try!
good luck! |

I think i would say Valencia. It's a big city but not huge so its has a good nightlife and a low crime. The culture is so interesting: fallas,paella,..
And it has beach!

Don't Listen to them South is the best part of Spain Andalucia in particular
I'll advise to go and visit Spain before Moving there....see for yourself
But for me the City your looking for is Madrid the best Nightlife in Europe and great culture also, it's the most cosmopolitan City of Spain...in terms of crime it's not too bad compared to big cities in the US it's safe
Hasta luego

Nerja on the Costa del Sol. Great little town by the sea. Still has the feel of a Spanish town. Stunning scenery, amazing cove like beaches. Granada and the Alhambra Palace an hour away. I love it here and live close by. |

THE COSTA DEL SOL WOULD BE THE BEST IN MY OPINION,
but Northern Spain can be nice, but places can even be more expensive north rather than in the south.
The best weather is of course in the south, I prefer the style of the homes here also, you have a much bigger choice of villas/apartments/fincas/rustic styles.
Plus the fact at first it is much less of a problem getting around/getting things done for a new resident with the language barrier, english is much more widely spoken in the south of Spain than in the north.
The nightlife and cultures are so much better also.
Northern Spain is like many other parts of europe, colder, miserable in winter, places close down much earlier.
Hope this helps you, resident of the costa del sol for 26 years. |
