Best way to get from Madrid to segovia?

I would like to get there in the morning and come back at night to avoid paying for a hotel. I was looking at renefe.es and it looks like they have cheap train tickets on the AVE but it looks like they only travel in the afternoon, which doesn't fit into my plans.
Additional Details
I see the one leaving the MADRID ATOCHA CERCANIAS station but it looks like it only goes to the segovia AVE station and only leaves in the afternoon

Personally, I would take a bus to Segovia from Madrid, not the train, especially if just going for the day. Taking the city bus from Principe Pio (underground bus station at Metro) is actually quicker and cheaper, and still very nice. Buses go every 30 minutes to and from Segovia starting at 6:30am and going until 9pm. It should cost about 6 Euro each way; you can buy your ticket at the station or online beforehand (see link below). Upon returning to Madrid, you can get off at Monocla before Pio if that is closer for you.

When you take the train, they drop you at a station just outside Segovia, where you have to take a bus or taxi to get into town (15-20 minutes). There is a difference between taking a local train (~2 hours) versus the AVE high-speed (~40 minutes), but you still have to catch a bus from the train station into Segovia. Taking the bus in the first place is easier and gets you there in about the same time total as the AVE+ local bus.

Have fun!

You want to take the circanias train from the Atocha station. I see the latest train back is at 9:00PM, the earliest is at 7:10AM on http://www.renfe.com

We send many students to learn Spanish in Madrid at: http://www.spanishabroad.com/madrid.htm and this is a popular excursion

Take a bus. It's the best option and Segovia is relatively close to Madrid, so in about 1 hour you're there.

I stayed overnight in Segovia. The atmosphere in the Plaza Mayor in the evening was well worth the hotel cost. I drove to Segovia and it was no problem, quite easy.

Train.

And it is NOT an AVE.

If you don't want to take the train, you can rent a car and take the A 6, I believe. It's pretty easy. If you are on the M-30, just keep going until you get to the exit for Segovia, and stay on the road that does NOT say p (meaning toll). It won't get you there that much faster, and it costs a bunch!

The Electrotren will get you there in about an hour.
