2 bottles of wine PER PERSON (not per adult...mind you, we almost brought a couple for my 8 year old son...not for him to drink, but for his allowance) unopened, of course, and in your CHECKED LUGGAGE! A bottle of wine goes a bit over that 3 oz. limit, you know.

food? I sent back some canned goodies, some chocolate, coffee (silly me, I didn't know to specifically buy torrefacto...I'll know better next time) and some sealed plastic items...no problems. I'm not sure what the actual restrictions were, but I shipped those through the post office. No big deal. I was so tempted to bring back a couple of oranges that I had picked off the trees, but I decided they'd probably bust me on that one, so I tossed them the last day.

Go to the US Government Customs page at http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/ for all the information you'll need to know what you can - and can't - bring back to the USA. It doesn't matter from where you come in the world.

Also go to http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml for the list of Prohibited and Restricted items.

Meats, Livestock, and Poultry
The regulations governing meat and meat products are very strict. You may not import fresh, dried, or canned meats or meat products from most foreign countries into the United States. Also, you may not import food products that have been prepared with meat.

For basic requirements regarding the importation of alcoholic beverages, see generally the Informed Compliance Publication titled "Classification and Entry Requirements of Alcoholic Beverages and Spirits." ( Classification and Entry Requirements of Alcoholic Beverages and Spirits (pdf - 144 KB.) ) - go to the aforementioned website to click the PDF file concerning alcohol.

Best of luck!

I got back from Spain a few months ago. You can definitely bring back wine and liquor and any food that isn't already opened. They will just ask you at customs what you have in your bag.
