With respect, it's not the tourists that support bull fighting. Most tourists coming to Spain never leave the beach. Spain has so much to offer with it's culture and history yet people just want to laze about.
As for bull fighting, it is only in about 3 provinces these days and mostly in Andalucia. In many provinces it is banned by law and others the population do not like it. Andalucia is the place where the bulls are reared. It will eventually die out, just the same way as foxhunting has died out in the UK. Having said that, if a lot of people got there way foxhunting would be reintroduced. There is just as much cruelty in foxhunting. I can't believe the pain an animal suffers being torn to bits.
Human beings have a very strange way of enjoying their sport. Even horse racing. The horse doesn't have much of a life and most when their careers are over they are put into tinned dog food. Then there is dogfighting and cockfighting. I could go on.

Bullfighting is only necessary to the people that support it....and i think that it is sad for a person to do this to any animal... If we need it for food i say go ahead and kill it...but bullfighting to entertain people should not be happening.....

if we in britain decide to stop football or foxhunting that's fine. but i wouldn't stop because some wet liberal lefty from spain told me to. and i wouldn't do the same to them.

i disagree about tourists. the local bull rings near where we go (andalucia) rarely seem to have many toursists.

and yes it is diminishing. just like everything fringe. the whole world is slowly (sometimes quickly) losing it's local culture in favour of the same high street stores, music, tv, sports, languages, and food.

doesn't it bug you that you can go into your local supermarket (say in london) and buy food from all over the world? wouldn't it be better if there were some surprises left when you went abroad? going to moscow or hong kong and finding macdonalds was the worst thing i could have imagined (and no, i didn't go in)

I am not a fan of the "fiesta nacional" as the spanish call bullfighting. But actually, it is not supported by tourists, there is still a large following of the bullfights in Spain. Yes the revenue is attractive, but the people that enjoy watching the pageantry of toreros, novilleros, matadores, picadores, rejoneros, etc. stand staunchly behind the tradition. I don't think it will die out soon...
There is tradition not only here in Spain, but also in many latin american countries such as Mexico and Venezuela and others...

Is it necessary? Definitely not, but then, neither is hunting, nor boxing for that matter.

P.S. The meat is one of the tenderest you can find, when it is available! The animal is not wasted once the corrida de toros is over.

I don't imagine that you have the slightest idea about bullfighting.
I do not like the idea of bullfighting, but this beast that we are has survived by being more inteligent than the animals. What would you prefere? a man that put food in you and your childrens stomaches or a whimp that said " I didn't want to hurt it" Of course it is not necessary,; tourists are not the main supporters of bullfighting.
Tell me what is the difference between 1 kg of beef in the supermarket and 1 kg of dead bull in a bull ring. To the bull< it is the same!

It is not necessary, but it is an art form, and it is a cultural experience.

I'm not entirely for it, but I have been to see a few corridas. They are interesting, though, truly, the people there for the last one were either tourists/foreign students, or old men, who have followed the sport all their lives. That could be because there was another one in four days, so the Sunday one might not have brought the usual crowd.

I assume you support some kind of ban and that this would be directed at Spain, as the main participants. I would pose the question "What gives us the right to judge others and what right have we to impose our values on others?"
If those of us against blood sports such as this wish to oppose Bull fighting we should abstain from any commercial activity connected with it. When the money dries up that will be the end of this activity. The tourist Euro is ever powerful in a country such as Spain where tourism is a major national income.
