The currency in use now in most of Europe is the EURO...
The exchange rate at the moment is $1,50 USD per 1,00€ euro.
You can exchange your money either at your airport at your leaving point, or on arrival at your spanish point of destination. (Madrid: Barajas Airport).
Most spanish banks will also exchange your american currency for euros.
But in reality, it might be easier for you to just pay for things with your credit card....(Visa, MasterCard, etc.) and not have to change much cash.
The only card that some places do not accept is the American Express Card. |

You may find a small number of hotels and shops that accept foreign currency, but expect to be ripped off on the exchange rate. For the most part, American currency will not be accepted.
You really don't want to carry American currency anyway. Aside from the risk, banks and money changers give their worst exchange rates for cash. You'll get a better rate with travelers checks, but still not the best.
You'll get the best exchange rate by using credit cards and ATM cards when you need to withdraw cash. ATM cards with a Visa or MasterCard logo are widely accepted. And, ATMs are open 24/7 so you never have to worry about running short of cash nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Just be sure to call your bank and card issuers before you go. Otherwise, they may think that your cards were stolen if they see foreign transactions. You won't have any problems as long as you tell them in advance.
I've been traveling to Europe for almost 30 years and have never carried American currency. I stopped carrying travelers checks 11 years ago. ATMs are so much more convenient and save me money. |

No. They have their own money. Your US dollars are hardly worth squat, anyway. You'll have to change them. The exchange rate right now is 1.59/1€. |
|

no way, jose

no you can't use dollars in spain. you have to convert them into euros. one euro is about $1.50, so things are expensive over there. |
