Can Spaniards have blue eyes?

Show all answers

Salva
My father - green eyes
My mother - BLUE eyes
Me and my brother - a happy medium between clear brown and green

So the answers is YES. There are also blond people as well. Spaniards are diverse, not everybody is dark-haired etc

Of course. Spain is a mixture of Northern Europe and Southern Europe. Kind of like in Italy- you are likely to find people with blond hair and blue eyes in the north and people with dark hair and complexion in the south.

There are no typical "Spaniards".

During the fiesta weekends many have red eyes in the morning! When I go for my early morning walk tomorrow I'll see if any of my neighbours have blue eyes.

Jane S
Yeah. If one or more of their parents have blue eyes, then they are likely to have blue eyes.

What do you think a Spaniard is, anyway?

*edit* Actually, Max has it wrong...Blue eyes are DOMINANT (see Gregor Mendel and his experiments) which means that if two parents have blue eyes, they will have a blue eyed child, but if one of the grand parents had blue eyes, it can pop back up in the grand children, too.

Thus, if both parents have brown eyes, they can STILL have a blue-eyed child. But if both parents have blue eyes, they will have a blue eyed child.

And, I know Carousel, and where he lives (LOL red eyes!) He is actually much less likely to find blue eyed neighbors, than our friends from the North, but I wouldn't write it off just because I know he lives in AndalucĂa!

dinodino
Yes, Spain's ethnicity includes Celts, Visigoths (Germans), Romans, Greeks, Berbers, all of those had blue eye gene.

I agree 100% with Jane, half of my family is dark haired, tanned skin and the like and the other half is the reverse, both halves are Spanish and they have been for centuries, we are all mixed now, my cousins have blue eyes and tanned skin, we have dark eyes green or brown, even black and fair skin, and we continue mixing, one of my cousins married to a girl from the Caribbean islands and their children have blue eyes and very dark skin, they are so beatiful, I can believe this question has been made

Lynxpardina
Most of us spaniards have brown eyes, but in the north you can find blue eyed people. Here in the north we have more north european genes than in the south. And you should know that we are kind of a mixture of different races. The ones who were here when romans came, the already mixed race that romans were, then the muslims came for 800 years and that's I guess is why we are darker than others, and of course the north european. We are not a pure race. Nobody is. And as it has been told to you, 2 parents with brown eyes can have a blue eyed kid. May be one grandparent had blue eyes or may be great-grandparent.

the Original Max
Jane is not quite right. The blue eyed gene is recessive, so it is possible for two brown eyed people to have a blue eyed child- (but two blue eyed parents cannot have a brown eyed child)

While I cannot answer your question definatively, I'm fairly sure that ethnic Spanish do not have blue eyes. I have never seen one and I have spanish friends, and have been there.
Of course one moves to Spain from northern Europe, as happens, will that count?
