Can you believe american people think spanish people from spain are hispanics..? |
I tell them, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Romania are the real Latin countries and people, Americans think the Latins are the people from Mexico, which i tell them its wrong, Hispanics are from the The Mayan, Aztec, and Inca Civilizations. Half of Americans think Spanish comes from Mexico and made its way to Spain which is wrong, its the other way around.. They also class people from Spain as Hispanic. I say they are White/Europeans.. Who is right?? |

People from Spain are spanish and europeans
People from other countries who speak spanish are not spanish (they are not europeans) people, they are just hispanic or latinamerican.
it is sooo easy. You are RIGHT when you say to your friends they are wrong!
Everybody knows that USA people don´t know where Spain is, that is a pitty because Spain is sooooooo much older than USA and with a lot more of history than them. Just some are ignorants! |

Ummm.
Let's see: The definition of hispanic is any country which uses the language SPANISH, and/or has a culture largely influenced by Spain.
Yup. fits.
The definition of Latino (which is short for latinoamericano) is: Any country in the New World, the primary language of which is derived from Latin.
The definition of a Latin Language (or a Romance Language) is one derived from Latin (yup, fits).
Most educated Americans do NOT think that Latino = Latin...Latino is a shortened form of latinamericano. '
Maybe YOU need a bit of education, since you don't think that Spain uses Spanish, or must not have a culture influenced by Spanish culture....I'm baffled, here.
Of course, Spanish people are Europeans, and don't look anything like most Latinoamericans...but they ARE hispanic...just look at the definition and root of the word!
Oh, just wondering...what does this have to do with travel???? I don't see how this is going to help me find a hotel, restaurant, or decide which museums to see. |

I can believe an American person would argue that French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Romanian people are not white. How many of the people you speak to have been to these countries? I have been to all of them, I currently live in Spain and I would say the majority of people are fair skinned or with olive tones. I'm Australian and a lot of Europeans are whiter than me!
If you look at a dictionary, it says hispanics come from Spain, but I would not like to call a Spanish person Hispanic over here.
You are right. Don't bother dealing with other people's ignorance. |

What I can't believe is how you generalize about a population of 300+ million. We all think the same? Says who? Who did you ask?
The term Hispanic in the US generally refers to the person as being of a cultural background that speaks Spanish. Since Spain spread their language pretty far - that covers many countries, not just mexico. As many Americans are from these same countries - who exactly are you referring to when you say "Americans"?
"Latin" refers to Latin America, where Spanish is the common language, not Latin the language as spoken in Rome. The French are Normans, not Latin either. The only Latin in France is via the Church - from Rome.
I think you need to stop overgeneralizing based on very little factual information. |

Hispanic-
1: of or relating to the people, speech, or culture of Spain or of Spain and Portugal
2: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the United States ; especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin
According to Merriam-Webster, you're both a little right. You are right that Spain influenced Mexico, not the other way around. My mother is Puerto Rican and Spanish and my father is Mexican. There is such a mix these days that the meaning of Hispanic and Latin can get kind of lost. From this definition people from Spain are Hispanic, but personally I think they are European. |

Well i don't think they are white i dont think they are hispanic they are simply spanish, french. portugese. romanians(spellcheck!lol)
I think a person who is ignorant will keep saying what they think because they are not educated. and those who are not educated have a narrow perspective |
