Hi, it depends what criteria U use to define important, economically, culturally, historically, geographically etc. I will use a combo of these to catalog:
In Old Castille - Castilla la Vieja- now Castilla - Leon
Salamanca: important for its university and trade
Avila: Important for its history and its walls and defenses
Segovia: History and gate to the capital Madrid. pre roman history
Burgos: important history and religious center. Origins of the Castillian language were Monasteries like San Esteban de Gormaz.
León: Important capital of León, scholar city and entry to Galicia and CantabrÃa.
Also important are Logroñó as part of the wine industry, culture etc entry to the rioja region, and Palencia also imprt. for trading etc.
Valladolid: was also Capital and very important trading area, especially cattle markets and vegetable products.
New Castille - Castilla la nueva - now Castilla la Mancha
Madrid: of course now is an autonomy in itself but has been the capital and was chose as such partly because of gteography it was a mid-point between Barcelona -Zaragoza and Seville-Granada, and geographical center of Spain, especially important in the route during the golden century and Imperial era. Good military placement surrounded by mountains.
Toledo: Old capital. Renowned for its culture, studies, multiculturality, the "congress" of Castille composed by jews, muslims and christians operated ther under the king Alfonso X the wise.
Cuenca: for its beauty and natural defenses. Important trading and route in the cattle movement from the mountain gracing -in summer to the plains in winter etc

Very much depends on what you mean by Castile.
Nowadays there are two Castillas, as autonomus regions; Castilla La-Mancha and Castilla y Leon.
*Castilla La-Mancha; consists of the provinces of Toledo(capital), Cuenca, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real and Albacete.
*Castilla y Leon; consists of the provinces of Segovia, Avila, Burgos, Valladolid(capital), Palencia, Leon, Salamanca, Soria and Zamora.
The Crown of Castilla historically consisted of all of Spain except Navarra, and the Crown of Aragon.
The Kingdom of Castilla, historically, includes Castilla y Leon (the heart of Castilla), Castilla La Mancha, Madrid, Cantabria and La Rioja.

First of all, neither Logroño nor Madrid aren't part of Castile.
Anyway, I suppose that you refer to Castile-Leon which is the most historic and beautiful one, there the most important cities are Burgos and Leon.
If you refer to Castile-La Mancha, the most importants are Toledo and Guadalajara. |
