It's basically the Times Square of Madrid. It's the central point of the city (and country) and from there you can walk to many other historical places such as the Palacio Real and the Plaza Mayor. The subway goes right through there and is very efficient; it will bring you anywhere you want to go in Madrid. In the Puerta del sol there are many great stores, for example FNAC, Casa del Libro and el Corte Ingles just to name a few. Up the way, there's the Callao neighborhood which has various theaters for films and plays. There's the Museo del Jamon which sells the best sandwiches in the world! Go there and order a bocadillo de jamon iberico and a beer. I dream of doing that when I'm not there. Anyway, you won't be disappointed in Madrid. Have fun.

i am from spain and i have been in madrid many times. puerta del sol is the perfect base of operations, for both day and night activities. great to hang out, walk around, dinning, bares y tapas!

i just came back from there...i was there Nov17-21, my hotel was 4 steps away from puerta del sol so with that said i can say its no big deal.. maybe because it has tons of barriors because they are doing reconstruction, it also is fulled with tons of people just standing there.. I have no clue why... And it has mexicans with mariachis.. Have no clue what the mariachis have to do with spain.. but anyhow thats my opinion.
