@ Scottm: Yeah I heard about places up in the hills. There was one place but I'm not sure of its name. All I know is that there's a gorge running throught the middle of it and a medieval bridge crosing it. I'll have to investigate further

Fuengirola isn´t too bad. It´s close enough to other interesting places to visit. I used to live close to Fuengirola.
To clarify another answer. The area where Von Ryan´s Express was made is at El Chorro. A gorge in the mountains north of Malaga city. Behind El Chorro is a huge lake and well worth a visit. You can see the area from your plane as you come into land at Malaga airport.
Fuengirola is a good base to travel from. Beware about going beyond the coastal mountains because it can get cold in winter. Ronda can get snow & frost. I live in the mountains to the east of Málaga. You could think about going to Nerja for a break. That is to the east of Malaga. It is a lovely resort that has retained the feel of an old Spanish town. Enjoy!

Hi, depends on what time of year you go. Arround this time there are older couples, who like to go there for winter sunshine, and stay for 6 weeks or so. There is a bus route that runs to Belamadina and along the coast, very reliable. Hope you have a nice time.

The place in the hills you are thinking about is Ronda...built on a gorge, it is a lovely trip....Mijas is also 'up in the hills', bit touristy, and has the 'donkey rides'.(not a lot of people like that.) But come a little further down the coast, and you can visit Benahavis, which is a little bit outside Estepona, and is famous for it's little restaurants, and nice village feel, and lovely views. Estepona itself is a lovely town, and still retains its local feel. Then you have Marbella and Puerto Banus, where the rich and famous hang out, so it's worth a visit!Yes, Fuengirola can be Blackpool in the Sun, but there is sooooooooo much to see in all directions, visits to Gibraltar, Cadiz, Tarifa Seville, and Granada..depends how much culture you actually want, ...maybe a bit of fish&chips and sun is what you fancy. Give it a go, you will find plenty of outdoor markets, local fiestas, real tapas bars, for a bit of local flavour and food, and nice harbours (ports) all along the coast where you can sit and watch the world go by, and enjoy the local atmosphere! Hope you enjoy it!

Snot Me
i live down between Marbella and Fuengirola and i agree what most people are saying although i prefere Fuengirola the best parts are inland as Ronda and Mijas pueblo. hire a car and travel around the area from Antiquerra down to Cadiz plenty to see and do. as someone said Tarifa is nice but windy as hell as it's on the Atlantic coast

Dogs'r'us
Hi there - it is like Blackpool or Southend with sun! There are lots of Brits there, british bars, restaurants etc, very popular with the younger set (I'm not saying that you're old), with lots to do and a fantastic nightlife. You will really enjoy yourself, but just remember that Fuengirola is not the "real" Spain.

I lived in Fuengirola for 9 years and it is what it is a "Blackpool with good weather"And a great deal of Spanish, English and Skandies love the place for holidays. However if you wish to feel that you have been to Spanish Spain , then take a trip or two out to the country side " CAMPO" Head north from Malaga to Alora and el Chorro, Very beautiful and very Spanish.Have a real nice time here in Spain.

The Costa del Sol is not really spain any more. you will hear more english than spanish.
I suggest renting a car and making some nice day trips up into the villages in the hills.

I was there about 5 years ago and I loved it, it depends when you are going, I went in July and I found it very family orientated and not full of teenagers, We went all inclusive to the Gardenia Park, it is British owned. Do not go to The Corhjo Blanco it is on the motorway and nothing there to do except relax, although it is near Peurto Banus. I am slightly older than your partner - I prefer Majorca, Santa Ponsa.

Welllll......Fuengirola is not very pretty. It is a resort full of buildings overlooking the beach and it is full of Brits eating fish&chips, watching Chelsea and not mingling with locals. But thew weather is nice even in winter.

To be honest, the place isn´t great, but you can easely travel to Malaga city or Granada or Cadiz (which is unespoiled still) in less then 2 hours. Like that, you´ll see a bit more of the real Spain.

we go 2 or 3 times a year to that area, benalmadena to be exact its far better and more of what your age range would enjoy fuengirola is not to our liking,a bit rough on the eyes and the bars are more geared to the younger end than our age.its ok for a half a day visit not many places to walk to.benalmadena would be mush better if you have not already booked.plenty to do and see lots of bars for your age group.there are many places to go and see in that region gibraltar, seville ronda granada malaga etc

I'm sorry to say that I found Fuengirola a boring dump, but I'm sure the tour operator lobby will be after me like a pack of hounds!

You should hire a car.
I don't like Mijas. It was great before the tourists came and Raquel Welsh made a movie there. All that's left is the view.
Go inland and explore Caseres instead.

You should go to Ronda and further on to Grasalema (sp?)and Arcos. The coast is all a bit grim until you go west beyond Algeciras. (Lock you car doors there and keep moving).
Tarifa, Conil, Chiclana are OK (great beaches) but Vejer is worth exploring.

Tip. If it's spring and you are a twicher visit the Algeciras rubbish dump. Smelly as hell but WOW!

Captain Sarcasm
Fuengirola is very lively and noisy place, it's caters for youngsters looking for 24 hour entertainment than any other type of holiday. It does tend to be a little "tacky" and is over commercialised. As another writer said it's very much like Blackpool.

From what you have said it sounds like you would like Sitio de Calahonda or Benalmadena more than Fuengirola.

The place with the bridge you have mentioned is called Rhonda.

Both have guide pages.
