Do Madrilenians tend to be jealous of Barcelonians? (Spain)? |
I heard somewhere that Madrilenians are jealous of Barcelonians because their city receives more tourists, is considered to be more beautiful, is located on the Mediterranean sea and has more culture, not to mention a supposedly better football team as well. Is this true? It seems absurd to me. Both cities are equally great in my opinion. Why would Madrilenians feel the need to be jealous over something so trivial? |

I would say no, they are not jealous. They just have the usual rivalry two major cities in a country have. |

It's not like this. Some people from Madrid do not like us because we are Catalan, have a different language (Catalan, co-official with Spanish in Catalonia) and some of us do not want to be part of Spain.
But it is not a question of jealousy: Barcelona receives more tourists but we, Barcelonians, are beginning to be a bit tired of mass tourism and people who are so vulgar and has so little respect on the city.
Madrid has much better museums and more theaters, so in cultural terms, Madrid has more to offer.
About football: maybe Barça is better than Real Madrid this year, but last year it was the other way round and we'll see what happens on the League this year.
All in all, I don't thik they are jealous uf us. This rivalry is more policital and football realeted than anything else. |

I don't know about jealousy between each other...there is a sense of competition regarding size and the football teams.
But I'm sure people from BOTH cities get upset by people who can't even figure out what they are called.
There is no such thing as either a Madrilenian or a Bareclonian! |

There is a lot of rivalry between the regions, not just Madrid & Barcelona, due to huge loyalty to the futbol teams. There are also different languages in Madrid (castellano), Barcelona (catalan), Pais Vasco (vasco/basque), and Galicia (gallego) which creates something of a barrier as well. There are a lot of stereotypes that each region casts on the others--like catalans (Barcelona) are supposedly very thrifty and stingy--they make a lot of money because Barcelona has a lot of industry, but they don't share. People from the south are labelled as party animals who never work & always the life of the party whereas people from the north aren't as friendly & take longer to form friendships... I think madrilenyos are more jealous of Barcelona's financial success than anything else--since B. can afford to pay for better futbol players... :) |
