Do a lot of men in Spain still like to live up to a macho image, or is this an outdated stereotype? |

It is on the decline here in Spain, as the younger generation of women just don´t stand for it like their mothers used to. Young women are more independent these days and alot stronger so they don´t put up with much.
Some Spanish men of course are still lazy, domineering and macho, especially in the gypsy cultures where it is expected of them, then the women are brought up to do alot more for their man.
My daughter has married a Spaniard (she´s English) and he learnt quick enough that she doesn´t suffer fools gladly, so he does his share and more on occasion!! |

Refined machismo still exists, as much in Spain as in the rest of Europe. It has just evolved to avoid being cast in the macho stereotype. |

Oh, yes, there are a lot of them around. I'd say the majority above 45 years old is not only trying to live up to the macho image but is also quite chauvinist. Even the younger generations are not free from the macho stereotype, although they try to hide it as it is not always accepted or desired by the female part of the society. But if you think of the amount of men who still enjoy hunting and bullfighting (not only watching it but also participating in fiestas which include a bullfight or something similar), then yes, machos are still fine over here... |
