Do the cinemas in Spain show films in English with Spanish subtitles or are they dubbed?

I live near Alicante and we'd like to go to the cinema but I think the films are going to be dubbed, my partner thinks they will just be subtitled in Spanish but will still be English speaking - does anyone know?

Ok,

What you need is a film that is publicised as:

V.O.S

Version Original Subtitulado - Original film with Spanish subtitles

I spend most summers near Alicante and there are some cinemas in the city that show these types of films. Check out "la guia del ocio" (search it) and select Cine - Alicante. It´ll show you all the films playing, times, locations and their versions.

One point to note! If the film is German / French etc it will be in that language and subtitled in Spanish....

since I've been in Spain I've never seen an English movie subtitled, always dubbed..... only DVD rentals i watched in English

surfer2thextreme
It depends on the cinema. I went to one where the movie was in english with spanish subtitles.

Sailinsun
All the cinemas near me are tight by showing only one film, i even went to watch one with my girlfriend and we had the place to our selfs, iT was like where do we sit lol

fel t
some films are in english not very many though. all the ones for the locals are dubbed, they don't have subtitles

They are usually dubbed.
I used to live in Lanzarote and even the dvd's from the rental shop were dubbed and not all of them had the option to change the language to English or even have English subtitles. It used to drive me crazy and I had to check everytime to see if it had English language/subtitles. Some of the films were even well known ones which you would think would have most languages, subtitled or dubbed.
Probably best to ask at the cinema though, I guess it would depend?

HI Mandy
Floit was about right depends on the area you live in say a tourist area or if there are many English speaking people in that area. You will often find that they set aside a particular day for films in English and it is normally advertised. I live in Gran Canaria and our cinema complex shows films in English normally on a Saturday. As Floit said try the web site or ask at your local cinema. It is a difficult question to answer but hope this helps Good Luck

99% of cinemas in spain shows films just in spanish.they translate everything. sorry for you...better to learn spanish...very useful!

Sakura_CJ
THE USUAL WAY IN SPAIN IS DUBBED.
BUT SOME CINEMAS HAVE SESSIONS IN ORIGINAL FEATURE WITH SPANISH SUBTITLES.

Both - depends on the film and the cinema.

I would suggest that you ask at the cinema as most movies are dubbed due to the strong union behind these "dubbing actors/actresses".

Martha P
The films are always dubbed. The only way to watch a film in english would be buying a DVD. Sorry, but that is the way it is here in Spain.

There is always a little chance to find films in english in specific places like flogit says or places where lots of english people live, but those are just a few.

I have the same problem here in the Costa.

Look for your nearest Yelmo cinema complex (they are on the net) we have one here in Barcelona and they show all films in original language. English films in English, Jap films in Jap etc. They have Spanish subs but NO DUBBING.

Most films will be dubbed, but some will be subtitled.

Big blockbusters will be dubbed because, as is the same anywhere, people prefer not to read subtitles.

Personally I couldn't concentrate on a dubbed film, I'd be too aware of the fact that their lips don't synch.

Start learning spanish - you'll pick it up in no time since you live there.

radioflyer57
There are both, but the majority of films I've seen in Spain have been dubbed into Spanish. I'd try looking for an American or British cinema.
