No - but it helps.

Sheldo
Why would you want to live in Marbella? Everything costs too much there and the company is pretty iffy too. Try Moraira!

I lived in Marbella for 7 years. You can live a normal life there, though as others have already said it is very expensive.
If you are definate about the Marbella location then it would help to speak a little spanish [though most Spaniards speak english], but if you want to work there you will benefit from the language.
Escuala De Idiomas[school of languages] in San Pedro is excellent for spanish courses and i highly recommend them. There are of course other Spanish classes in other areas.
If you were thinking of Fuengirola or Torremolinos or San Pedro, Estepona for EG these places are less expensive and San Pedro and Estepona are more Spanish too.
The life is fabulous there though and yes there is the element of bad reputation in Puerto Jose Banus like the others have mentioned but quite honestely you can live a normal happy life without any contact or distruption from any of this.........I do beleive all of our cities have bad reputations in certain area too.
I do not regret living there and my life benefitted as a result and I have many happy memories. You need to be realistic and have a organised plan before you go.
Good Luck if you decide to go!

Marbella is like living in any other major city, more expensive than the surrounding areas. Even so it's not over the top if you shop around.

Well, I have a good friend who lives there and I can assured you that she isn't rich at all!!
Personally I like more other Spanish cities...

There are a lot of locals residents that have been in Marbella for generations, who go to work, school, bars, shops etc just like any one else...........obviously they are not rich! They have normal schools, shops, medical centres etc......The 'rich' that live there are foreigners, who come from every other country in the world........buy the expensive properties/boats and have created their own little 'rich' world down in the Puerto Banus. And with money comes corruption, drugs, etc, who needs that? Marbella also has state/council housing too, again for local people to send their kids to school, and the equivalent of our NHS service.

It helps if your rich as your paying for the popular name. I live about 1 hour from Marbella and pay alot less than the Marbella area......even buying something like McDonald's is more expensive in Marbella....if you want value for money then live somewhere else.

Depends where in Marbella you want to live. There are some beautiful places that are costly, but like all tourist places, there are some pretty seedy cheap areas aswell.

NO, you don't have to be rich, but it helps, but all along the costa you can live how you wish, if you have the money live the style for Marbella, I live In Benalmadena, its cheaper, although even here some things are still not as cheap as inland areas, but the cost of living is still much, much cheaper than in the UK, petrol, booze, vegs, taxes, rates, etc.,
try it you will not want to go back to the UK beleive me! I have been here 25 years!

You can get by,but no, it is not like the rest of Spain, just like living in London is not the same as Newcastle, or Brighton is to Bridlington, no offence to anyone but we all know what I'm trying to say :-)
Anyone can get anywhere but it depends on the individual and their personal skills to get on anywhere.

Snot Me
i live there and i'm certainly not rich you have to eat, shop and generally do what the locals do and it's not as expensive as people make out.
on the other hand there is puerto banus that i cant even afford to pay the car parking charges there

Ana
No you dont have to be rich to live in Andalucia... Marbella is an awful place where a lot of corruption, ne1 wanna live here, except the sun and the sea.... But u can find that in some other places in Spain which are better like Cadiz, Mallorca, Bilbao, Barcelona...
If u read the latest news... u noticed that the whole politics in Marbella now are in the jail, one of them have a ´Salvador Dali´s paint in the BATHROOM!!! and they stole a lot of money of the town of Marbella is the worst place in world.

I am Spanish.

Marbella and the costa del sol generally are full of people that a)genuinely do have money b)Think they have the money till they arrive then realise its a different world.
Live somewhere else less pretentious

I was just going to say the same, no, but it helps, rents are higher, even going to the hairdresser is more expensive, like if you were living in london
