From June 13, Spanish authorities will be asking travellers to provide detailed information about themselves before they fly to the country. Travellers to the United States have faced similar demands since early 2005.

Airlines have been told that the information needs to be supplied to Spanish customs authorities before anyone boards an aircraft, so check-in will be the last time passengers can provide the their details.

Known as Advance Passenger Information (API), the details required are the full given names, surname, nationality, date of birth and passport number of all travellers to the country.

Spain is the first EU country to start collecting API from incoming travellers, but the practice is expected to be introduced in other member countries within 12 months.

Can I supply this information to you online?

Yes, passengers can provide the required passenger information either after completing their flight booking online or via a weblink on our homepage or via the change/review booking function. A weblink will also be included in the 'Before You Fly' email which is sent to all passengers who provided us with an email address at the time of booking. What if I refuse you permission to release my data to the authorities?
If you do not provide us with the required passenger information in you will not be accepted for travel at Check-In.

What will this information be used for?
The data may be given to Border Control authorities, who have a legal right to receive the data. They may share it with other enforcement bodies for the purposes of preventing and combating terrorism and other serious crime.

When you click on the link on their website it tells you what they require, usually your passport details, name etc.

i booked through ryan air on the internet and came across this and i think we just gave them a few details like names, ages and passport numbers, the boxes were already set up for this though so i dont know how it works if you book over the phone or in an agents.

It's just your full name and passport number. The Spanish Government started this policy last year. BA, Easyjet and Ryanair all let you fill this in online.

if you've just booked flights why would you need any thing else apart from a passport unless you have a criminal record in spain it's part of the EU with open borders contact ryanair and find out what the problem is

Unless you are planning to stay in the country doing long term study or work or living/traveling, all you'll need is your passport, date of birth and nationality. As some other users said, some airlines allow you to do that on their website itself (under some section of the sort of "Manage my booking", "My personal details" or similar). If you fail to provide this information (or there's no such application in the website) do NOT worry, your details will be taken at the (departure) airport in the check-in desk when you request your boarding pass or check in your bags.

Nonetheless, there are a few exceptions that require additional documentation. I would advise you to check whether there is an exception with your country because some countries (eg. India, China) may be required a visa upon entrance, and/or documents such as financial statements, hotel reservations, etc. You can check that in any Spanish Consulate/Embassy webpage.
