The Exotic Dr. Congo

Does Spain, a non-country so riven by internal ethnic conflict & with no lyrics in its national anthem, really

deserve to win a major international football tournament?

Spain is not really a nation state, but a hodge-podge of antagonistic nations coerced into a federation

Spain is a country with very different and strong national feelings. Nowadays for a catalan, for a basque, for a galician, it's hard to feel themselves spanish.

Spain is a State since 1492, when the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon were merged between them. In spite of that, Spain have never been a national state.

There are two ways to create a national state: acculturation or assimilation.

When Philippe d'Anjou (the first Bourbon king) won the succession war (XVIII century), he tried to erase, delete, remove the non-castilian cultures, but he wasn't efficient enough.

In modern times the system has been to apply a castilian or andalusian identity for the whole Spain, but it had no success.

The only way is to remove the castilian identity and assimilate all cultures and nations into the concept of Spain, creating a culture of cultures. The only way is a federal Spain which respected each way of feeling, speaking and thinking.

Edit: the national anthem is another issue. I like to sing lo-lo-lo-lo-lo lol.

Forgive the presumption, but I'd always assumed that winning a football tournament was based on footballing skill rather than the lyrical content of songs.

If they have the stuff on the field, can demonstrate a superiority on the field, then they deserve to win.
The other crap you mentioned is mostly untrue and totally irrelevant.

someone bitter that they beat your team maybe? They are a real nation. and who cares if there are lyrics in their national anthem. You know how many countries don't have lyrics?

Crazeddoglady
Wow - bitter. That's the way the ball bounces - dude.

Yo say it's not a nation because they have 4 differnt languages? Because there are nationalists? You mean like Belgium? Or Italy, whre the north wants to get rid of the south because they are poorer and they don't wanna help them? Aren't they real countries either? And Spain is in the European Union (Or doesn't it exist, with those many countries and languages?) and they have very good footbal teams so yes, they deserve to win if they do. And by the way, lately they have invented a lyric for the national anthem, wich is stupid because everybody is happy with not having it.

By the confusion of your question I guess you must be a depressed Italian this morning!!
Spain won the semi final because they were better and more skilled than Italy, nothing to do with internal ethnic conflict (what!!) or the National Anthem
Get a life! Moron
