For a city of its size, Madrid boasts an exceptional number of world - class museums and galleries. Heading the list is the Prado, with the worlds largest collection of Spanish art, the Thyssen – Bornemisza, which traces the development western art from the 14th century, and Reina Sofia, with its outstanding display of modern art see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/madrid.htm

The Prado Museum and the Royal Palace (Palacio Real) are great choices. Also Retiro park is nice if the weather cooperates. Plaza del Sol and Gran Via are good choices just for a lot of life--shops, restaurants, etc. If you want a day trip out of Madrid Toledo is very nice to visit too.
