Does anyone know what "whitebait" is called in Spain.?
I am going to the Pyrenees in Spain for christmas this year and would like to know what "whitebait" is called in Spain and how it would appear in a menu there.
Can I buy it fresh there at that time of year?
Cero is correct, the closest thing to whitebait are boquerones, which are deep fried fresh anchovies, which taste nothing like the tinned kind you probably know. As for buying them fresh in the Pyrenees in winter, in the snow - I doubt it, but if you pass a fishmonger go in and have a look. You can buy them marinated in tins or jars in the supermarket. On a menu you will probably see them as "boquerones fritos".

They don't have whitebait, but they do have something similar. It is "boquerone". They are small fish deep fat fried just the same as whitebait........Enjoy!
