I am just going to add to what everyone I've read says.
i would say that 40% of Brits come to Spain as some form of builder and i where i live have at least 30 to 40 different builders.
you have to be registered to do work here and its very on off .
the reason is alot of people prefer Spanish builders because they have known them all their lives and recommend to each other.
also we now have a massive increase in Romanian, polish,Moroccan cheap labour and that also puts a strain on you competing for every scrap of work i live inland so i would suggest coastal areas.
don't want to put you off but don't think its easy it isn't and if you cannot speak the language then you are limitedhandicapped immediately.
Dont buy a prop rent first and if your happy then buy cause once your committed your stuck houses have slowed down now.
hope this helps good luck.
i live in Catalonia and they have two languages here so check before you move.

I have lived in southern Spain for the last two years. Its not easy to find regular work and if you don't speak Spanish you are limited.

My advice would be contact all real estate agents especially the ones with rental property on there books.

the reason is because most real estates agents on the Costa are run by the English or English speaking personal, and are always on the look out for a good handy men.

Now the summer season has come to the end, owners that rent their property will now be looking to redecorate or repair the property ready for next year, so it can be a busy time.

You will need to have a NIE number to work, i choose not to become a resident because if you work in Spain and pay a certain amount of tax you become a fiscal resident.
This now gives you the same rights as anyone with residencia.

A good accountant if you are looking to move any ware near the Calahonda area is P60 above the Barclay's Bank, speak English and will sort everything for you even your NIE number and social security card.

I wish you good luck, I have loved every minute of it and if you want it bad enough you will succeed.

The answer depends entirely on your nationality. All EU passport holders have the automatic right to employment in Spain. I have lived here for 15 years. But beware there is very high unemployment in southern Spain and those who are lucky enough to find a job are usually on very low wages. Good luck.

Even if you're not fluent in the language, mastering the basics and being able to hold at least some kind of conversation in Spanish will greatly increase your chances of finding a job in Spain see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/retiring_guide/jobs.htm

The first thing you need to do is to take out residentia in spain.
You must go to see a notario and he will tell you what forms etc. you will need. It costs approx 100 euros each person. They will do all your paper work for you and it takes about three months. Hope this helps.
Good Luck.

Listen.

Colmbian, Ecuadorian, argentian, peruvian workers here are plentiful.
Theyll work all day for 40 or 50 euros.

Can u match that ?

There is work, but you will struggle.

You are also assured of hefty competetion if u decide to go self emplyed... just about every village 50 miles of here has a huge expat community with "experienced" plasters, builders, plumbers, painters etc etc etc ..
The only customer base is *really* the english....

Go Careful.

Better off finding a genuine NICHE... but it aint easy.

Ive been here 2 years, and am moving bak.
SO here is my little pearl of wisom to you. Its a business I considered setting up, and as far as I have established there is NO competetion. It has huge huge potential, and you can charge 20-50 euros for about 15 minutes work...

This is 100% not a scam, and I havent even discussed it with a single other person... its going to need u spending about 4K.
NOT from me I hasten to add..... its something I can point u to on ebay, which I have 100% no connection with...Its just an opportunity that I looked at, but our move home has caused this to go belly up.

up 2 you.
email me at justsquiff@yahoo.co.uk if you want to know more..
