Flamenco Castanets...? |
I purchased a set of Ebony Flamenco Castanets. They sound so great when played correctly, and hoped that I could learn to play them like that too! When I looked up how to play them, (the 1;2;3;4 on the right and and 5 on the left), I decided to try a roll...
The problem is, I cannot seem to do a roll. I get one click on the right castanet and obviously one on the left. What am I doing wrong? Is the castanet too small for my hand or is it that I am holding them wrong? (Looped over the thumb, lying slightly open)

You should pull the loop so that you have two loops, one on either side of the joint. And, yeah, they loop over the thumb. The knot should be right about at your knuckle. Then, it's little more than drumming your fingers on the right, and a clack on the left.
Make sure the loops are big enough. Once adjusted, you will probably never have to adjust them again. You may need a second pair of hands to tie for you.
And you start with the left (clack) right, (drum the fingernails) and left.
Ta rrrrrrrrrrrri ah. pi ta. (ta = clack on the left rrrri = drum on the right, ah = clack, pi = clack on the right, or CAN be clapping them both together, and ta = clack on the left. the vowel a = left, and i = right.)
remember to toss the bottom half up to the top half on the clacks. |
