Gibraltar - access by car, driving around the base of the rock? |
Hi,
has anyone been to Gib from Spain by car in the last year or so?
Do the Spanish customs still make cars wait for hours at the crossing?
How long will it take to Drive from Benalmadena / Malaga on the {new } motorway?
Would be best advice be to leave the hire car on the Spanish side and walk?
Fancied a drive around the rock - sure to be a bus service / sightseeing trips?.
Plan to take the cable car to the top of the rock and go to caves inside the rock.
I've e-mailed GIB tourist office re points above, but no reply as yet - may be close over the Xmas / New Year Hols ?
Cheers
We are going to the Costa Del in April for 15 days. Checaked with car hire co and we Additional Details yep, got cut off - car hire co says yes, the insurance will cover Gib too. |

From Benalmadena to Gib will take you about an hour and a half, and cost about 4 or 5 quid on the toll road.
It's a good idea to set off by about 8am - that way you get there before all the tourist buses. Same goes for setting off back to Spain - by about 4 o'clock, the queue is starting to build up at customs.
Taking a car onto the rock is no problem - once you cross the runway, follow signs for "superstore" and park on Morrisons carpark - it's free! Leave the carpark and walk towards the big pointy rock, and you'll be on Main Street in about 5 mins.
Don't forget to take your passport and car documents - I've never been asked for car docs., but you're supposed to have them with you.
While cigs and booze are cheap, you can only take limited amounts back over the border - be careful!
Not sure about bus trips - I've driven to the top of the rock a few times, but wouldn't recommend it if you don't like heights!
It's easier to spend Sterling rather than euros, as all the shops seem to set their own exchange rates - at least if you use £££ you know what you're spending!
Make sure you don't get saddled with a load of Gibraltar notes and coins - you can't get rid of them. Most shops will give you change in Sterling if you ask them nicely.
Finally, pick a fine day for your visit - Gibraltar in the rain is a miserable place to be!
Hope this has been of some help - enjoy your trip! |

I have relatives who do that journey at least once a week. They drive into Gib and park up, as one person said, Morrison“s have a free car park so that would be a good bet.
Getting into Gib isn“t as bad as it was a few years ago. However, the Spanish authorities occasionally slow things down for whatever reason they have, sometimes they don“t need a reason, but if you get there early you should be okay. There are lots of coaches visiting Gib. In most cases the passengers have to walk through customs and they must carry with them everything they have bought in Gib. then get back on the coach.
The tax free allowance from Giraltar into Spain is not the same as the rest of the EU. There are strict limits which occasionally get adhered too. Check out the following link for your allowances. Bearing everything in mind you should have a great day. |

The Rock is not huge and, although I don't know what the bus prices are these days, back in '78 it was pennies. One price, irrespective of where you got on or off.
From my recollections ...........I honeymooned there............I would think you'd probably be better leaving the car in Spain and taking the bus on the Rock.
Did the cable car and the caves........but don't feed the baboons!
Also, unless it has changed........English pounds and coinage are acceptable. |

i love the costa del sol gib is an easy place to get to get there about 10/30 should be easy going on but best thing to do is park in one of the side streets before going on to gib and walk down as there is limited parking and its dear. The cable car is scary if you dont like heights dont take any bags as the monkeys jugrab them so hold onto your handbags you can i think get a bus round the island whisky can be £2-00 a bottle be careful on the costas handbag thieves go round on m/cycles keep h/bags out of veiw have a good time .mick |

In gibraltar there arent monuments. Principal street, Monkeys, rock, sea and __. In another place can you meet more monuments.
For example Malaga or Marbella in Costa del Sol (Spain)
