Barcelona is the most cosmopolitan city in Spain. Beautiful city, excellent food, night life, incredible architecture, shopping and history. Don't miss la Sagrada Familia, El barrio Gotico, Parque Guell and El Tibidabo Amusement Park with best view in the city.
I love Spain.

Probably any bigger city in Spain, but personally I would go with Barcelona, as it has many, many things to offer. Depends on what you are looking for.

Shopping, sightseeing, beaches, nightlife, close to France and Costa Brava in case you have time.

Since everyone has picked Madrid or Barcelona, how about something different. Cartagena,Murcia or Gijon,Asturias. The problems with The former is both are huge cities and major tourist traps. If you want better service and lower prices the later are better. Cartagena is in the southeast of Spain. Dry and sunny weather.If you want more green mountains and beaches then try Gijon. Gijon is in the north center of Spain. Life is short, try something different.
