If you can stay in a place north of the Pl Catalunya you´ll feel much more comfortable and get more for your money in your hotel. The Ramblas is great, in any case, and you´ll have fun. Watch for pickpockets, and if someone points out that you have a stain on your shirt and offers to help wash it out tell them to go to hell. They put the stain on themselves and are preparing to rob you.
But don´t let this scare you -- it´s a great and fascinating city, just don´t be too obvious with lots of money around the Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, or--especially--the old Barrio Chino (just west of the Ramblas)

Beware of pickpockets.

Must:
-Bring money if you want to buy clothes in the shops (Zara, Dolce&Gabbana,Adolfo Dominguez, Pull and Bear, Benneton, etc..)
-Bring money for having nice dinners and lunches on the restaurants in the ramblas.
-Visit the sagrada familia.
-Bring suncream, sunglasses and swimming suit for the beach, it feels hot here.

Must be aware of:
-pickpockets.

Duke has given you the correct tip. Barcelona is the only place I've ever witnessed a handbag being stolen. Seriously, put your money in an inside pocket and don't carry a bag. The children in the city are the worst thieves. Just be very, very careful.

La Sagrada familia,Ive probably spelled that wrong but youll know what it is when you get there. Its a church that the artist Gaudi designed,Ive probably just spelled his name wrong as well.Never mind, well worth a visit.

Keep stuff you carry with you safe, money, phone, cards etc. Better in a purse or something in an inner zipped or well-buttoned pocket. Have just a small amount of loose change where you can easily reach it.
Be careful with hand/shoulder bags.
Otherwise it's great. Vibrant and fascinating and the main market is set out like a painting. The subway is easy to navigate and the buildings are beautiful.
Good food and wine.
Enjoy!

Just watch out for thieving east europeans, use a money belt or some other secure item for your money cards etc. Then enjoy.
