Going to Barcelona this summer......? |
The host family has asked what I want to do when I visit. Besides the Beach what would interest the typical 17 year old. Shopping is also a personal favorite as well. Also I have to bring gifts for the family.Would this be o.k. ?A yankee candle for the Mom, NY Yankees shirts for the Dad and brothers and candy from Hershey ( I live close by)for the girl I'm visiting. |

If you're the typical American tourist, just go to Placa Catalunya, which is in the center of town. There is this huge department store called El Corte Ingles that you can just about find anything you want in(an incredible supermarket in the basement level)
and if you want to shop for clothes, just go to the pedestrian only street that is an offshoot from here...SOOO many great stores. This leads to the Cathedral and eventually the Ramblas. IMO the Ramblas was great, plenty of crowds and cool street performers, but it is so touristy!!! There are many tourist shops here, but they look like the made-in-China type. If you have lots of money, there are many first class shopping stores on the beautiful Passage de Gracia, which is also an offshoot of the Placa Catalunya.
Also just get lost in the zig-zag streets of the Gothic Quarter....many many interesting stores. Trust me- I was 16 three summers ago when I went. Incredible city =) I literally spent every penny |

Catch the funicular up to mt. tibidabo.. There's a little theme park and an impressive cathedral on top of this massive mountain and you get a 360 degree view of the entire city, really cool.
There's heaps of good clothes shops, try "Bershka", "H&M" and "Pull & Bear". Try the street "Portal Del' Angel" parallell to La Rambla to find almost all of these. Also the streets around 'Universitat' metro stop are full of vintage and cool clothes shops.
Since nobody checks ID's in Spain I'm guessing you'll want to hit the clubs.. 'City Hall' near Plaza Catalunya is popular. as is the converted burlesque hall 'Apolo'.
Just get lost in the tiny streets of the Gothic quarter and you'll love it trust me! |

If you plan on leaving the city this interactive map shows the activities in the surrounding areas.

I personally also liked Tibidabo mentioned above, the theme park on the hill above the city. Our kids thought it was great.
Have fun. |
