Assuming unlimited funds.
------------------------------
These are the four most important day trips from Madrid. Listed in order of age (first two are most important):
Old Town of Segovia and its Aqueduct [Roman]
Historic City of Toledo [Old capital from Visigothic era]
Old Town of Ávila [medieval city:11th-16th century ]
Escorial Monastery [post Columbus: 16th century] 28 miles
--------------------------------------...
These two are a bit furthur,
Centre of Córdoba (102 minutes each way by train)
- Leave early. Still a reasonable day trip.
Old City of Salamanca (150 minutes each way by bus)
- Probably better to go to Salamanca overnight trip

Toledo!!! My most favorite city. Old and fun. Enjoy your trip. Seville is awesome too, but further away. Be prepared to lose part of your heart, Spain is great

Plaza Mayor

Royal Palace (Palacio Real)

Parque del Retiro

El Teleférico de Madrid

Prado Museum (Museo del Prado)

hope you have a great trip! take lots of pictures!

You absolutely have to see the museums. Just a little hint: there are tons, but you can't miss El Prado, El Museo Reina Sofia, and El Museo Thyssen. The first two are public, so they are closed certain days, and they are also free other days. Check the schedule and you can save yourself some money. The third museum is private, so it's never free, but it's a must see. It has one of the best private collections ever!!

whatver you do, visit the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. there's probably a few galleries and museums to see as well.

How many days will you be in Madrid? If only a few days, you'll have to prioritize your visits.

If you're into museums, you could visit 3 of the best museums in Spain while in Madrid: El Prado, El Museo Reina Sofia, and El Museo Thyssen.

If you like public parks, the Retiro Park is really someplace special.

Squares: Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Oriente, Plaza de Chueca, Plaza Santa Ana, Plaza de Ramales, Plaza de España.

Neighborhoods: Huertas, Chueca, La Latina, de Los Austrias

Other: Royal Palace, Puerta de Alcala, La Rosaleda Park, Atocha train station "rain forest", Puerta de Toledo, El Rastro on Sunday, Toledo Bridge (Puente de Toledo), go up the El Faro de Moncloa for a westside 92-meter-high skyline view, Templo de Debod.

Daytrips-in order of priority: Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial

Enjoy your time in Madrid! And be sure to pick up a Lonely Planet guidebook for Madrid. You'll find all of our comments listed there was well as hundreds of other things to do and see.
