you must see la sagrada familia, its amazing, also parc guell. both designed by gaudi and absolutely amazing. there is a tour bus which does the whole city and you can hop on and off wherever/whenever you feel like it and jump back on the next - theyre every hour or somethin like that. some think its a cliche to take the tours but you can get an idea of whats around and do the stuff that takes your fancy in more detail another day. i loved the shops and bars in the old part of town - try to avoid la ramblas if you want a flavour of local life as its all aimed at tourists, not authentic and hugely overpriced. shopping is great - loads of little alleys and new shops to discover if thats your thing. the beach in town is ok but there was lots of loo paper and other unpleasant stuff floating around(the beach itself was very clean, just not the water)you can bus out to nearby places with much nicer beaches, though we didnt get around to it. i heard sitges was nice, and not too far out.
i wholeheartedly recomend barcelona, a fantastic city and will definitely be going back, hope you have lots of fun.

Barcelona has art collections by Miro and Picasso as well as the famous architecture of Antonio Gaudi. It is also renowned for fashion, and there are plenty of small shops to look around both fashion and other shops. The cathedral Sagrada Familia is worth a look, it was started in the 1880s (I think) and it isn't finished yet. It has been funded by people paying money to try to absolve themselves of their sins and they haven't got enough money yet! Although it looks nearly finished and very bizarre. I was going to pay for my sins but I didn't have enough money :-) Hope you have a good time.

Barcelonas fantastic i went there last year. I would say the best things to see are Sagrada Famille and Parc Guell, but there are lots of other things to see also. Its a good idea to get a tour bus which go past all the places of interest theres three different routes to do but the red and blue routes i would say are the best. The good thing i founed about Barcelona is that you can do a bit of everything and parts of it are very different, you can relax on the beach, or go down the port, or into the hustle and bustle of the city. Its definately one of the best places ive been you will really enjoy it.

The spanish village up in montjuic area. Parc Guell, La Familia Sagrida, Las Ramblas, Gothic Quarters, Harbour, Stadium.

Get a hopper bus ticket, and you can just hop on and off all day.

Barça is only the name of the sports team (football, basketball, handball, hockey, atlethics, etc.) not the name of the city.
Anywhere in Barcelona is nice and cool to visit, it's a great city and you will find out as soon as you get there.
Good luck!

If I'm redundant, I apologize, but in addition to what I saw mentioned -- La sagrada familia, Parc Guell, etc., -- a trip to Mont Juic is a good idea. You can see the Olympic Museum there (from the '92 Games) as well as some of the venues. But you get a nice panorama of the city and a beautiful view of the Mediterranean as well.

If you have the time and inclination, I suggest a trip up the coast to Tossa de Mar. When I was last there ('99), it required a train ride and two bus rides from Barcelona, unless you have your own car or they've improved public transportation. It's really worth the visit.

just got back from a fab holiday in barca!!! was very concerned prior to going about this issue.....however found that they are very tourist friendly in Barcelona, they have 2 different coach companies, one private and one public systems that organise tours around the city they take you to all the major tourist destination... we had to take the private bus as the public system was on strike when we went. its an open bus, and they provide you with maps and and audio guide... it does cost 20 euros but is a lot of fun!!!!

sarasmileshine
Gaudi's architecture. You can't miss it; it's all over the city.

A man shouted at me in Barcelona because they are people being statues and they were another man n a box and i shacked his legs and shouted at me in his own language i didn't know what he said but it was very funny the best place was in town with the statues.he he!:)

chimpo
The street performers on las ramblas, picasso museum, the beach (but be warned, thai women offering massages!they dont let up!) all the gaudi stuff. And while hitting all the amazing shops, take in the street art/graffiti. its amazing! x

Gaudi cathedral, ramblas, shops. If your going for Mobile World Congress - avoid the Fira, crowded, awful catering, full of techies talking about mobile phones

all the suggestions above are good, but they all miss out the best building in the world. in 1928 an architect called ludwig mies van der rohe designed a 'pavilion' for the barcelona expo. it is shocking that such a beautifully simple modern building was actually designed 80 years ago.
it's very near to the magic fountain (on the right going up the hill) it's called the barcelona pavilion or "pabellon mies van der rohe".
bari gotic, the old quarter is beautiful too, you'll find the picasso museum there, which is well worth a visit, as are the local tapas bars.
one last tip, just north of the plaza de catalunya is the cerveseria catalana - and the best tapas i ever had!
