I was once put into the

HOTEL RIALTO

Fernando / Feran, 42
08002 Barcelona
SPAIN
Tel: (34) 93 318 52 12

Miro was born there! (pre hotel, I suppose.

The Ramblas is at the end of the street.

Check Grupo Gargallo web site.

I was also in the Hotel Suizo some time ago it's a bit more 'typical Spanish'.

Hey there. the best site I know for booking hotels in spain is www.bancotel.com. You book the hotel through the website and you buy vouchers either through the site or from travel agents in Spain (they are available from most high st agents) which you exchange for rooms. The vouchers cost 50 euros each and depending on the hotel it will be one, two or three vouchers per night (for three it will be a top quality hotel but you can get 4* for one voucher). You then just pay for any extras and 7% VAT when you check out. It is just brilliant and all the big hotels participate. The only downside is that in high season you have to be quick!

Most visitors stay in or near the Ramblas (hotels) or in the Gothic Quarter just to the east. This is a good base from where you can explore the city's sights by day including Gaudi's masterpiece, the unfinished Sagrada Família Cathedral, and Parc Güell in the north. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/barcelona.htm for more details hotels etc.

as stated previously it is best to just go and haggle in las ramblas but if this is a "luxuury" vacation for you or you just want to get off the plane and go straight into a hotel, best to use online services. Most hotles and hostels in ramblas are relatively inexpensive and I say this as a single traveler who was a student at the time visiting barcelona (two years ago). But if your on a budget staying just outside of ramblas, I'd say more to the east than the west as the farther west you go it does get sketchy, its relatively cheap, close to the port, and a nice little walk to ramblas, took me about ten minutes at a steady pace! Have a great time as you will have a new bedtime if you hang with the locals!

Try www.hostelworld.com . We found a very cheap place near the Ramblas, to the east of it, but it was a bit of a kip, to be honest, with the creakiest old beds ... I think if you want a good clean place with beds you can live with in Central Barcelona, you need to spring a bit of cash (if you'll pardon the pun). Try just west of the Ramblas, you might have better luck in those narrow streets.
