Yet another Spanish scam. These guys are con artists. They approach a young tourist and maintain that you committed a minor offence like spitting or jaywalking or throwing a cigarette butt on the street. They ask for your passport and enquire how much cash you have on you. They then threaten you with jail unless you pay an on the spot fine of 200 Euro. If you haven't got the money they will escort you to an ATM to get it. Sometimes they will even take your passport, depending on which country it's issued in, and they sell it on.
The Barcelona police know who these guys are but appear to be doing nothing about it.
They are very intimidating but, always insist on going to a police station if they approach you.

All last year on Irish radio they were highlighting scams going on in Barcelona with fake police.Problem was it appears the actual police might have been in on it.What happened?
arigatou gozai masu!!!
that happened to me, we were gonna smoke some of the hasshishh u know, and those "cops" told us , give us that and they checked us and all that and thought they were legit. then later, we were doing it again with other people then they came to us again and i thought we were f-cked but then the real police came and they just ran away. and we were like wat the hell they run if theyre the police? but i wasn't in barcelona.

Barcelona - love the place but if anyonw talks to you - they are trying to scam you. Thing is they are about 10 years behind London in terms of scams and they are not violent at all. I remember one time I was back of Plaza Reial walking down the alley to go to Shanghai bar, and 3 guys tried to mug me - I tripped one over and punched one and they all ran off! They could have beat me to death but are scared of deportation to Morocco.
Other things I have witnessed in Barco: Urban Guard beating the living hell out of a pickpocketer in the middle of the road.Polica all getting drunk in a bar.
