Has barcelona got good beaches? ?

I am planning to go to spain this year and was wandering if the beaches in Barcelona are as good as the others in spain, or are they not as good due to being so close to the city life (pollution etc)?
Thanks,

The beaches in the city are so-so, as others have mentioned. But the beaches outside the city are nice. Platja de Castelldefels has broad, busy beaches with a little but of trash, while Sitges has some very nice, clean beaches that aren't as big (these are both accessible by train in 30-40 minutes). Skip the man-made beaches in Lloret de Mar, but if you can work your way up to Cadaques you're in for a real treat. Cadaques is a little farther than the others.

My gran accidentally ended up in a nudist one!

The ones closest to the city are next to the port and are slightly polluted but more so its the leaves and seaweed that I found horrible. but saying that i went with two children and they thought this was the best beach ever! as soon as you step into the sea you drop about two feet down, so not good for little children. they also liked playing with the seaweed!! these beaches are busy! (especially in high season) but they have a lively vibe and have many bars around. But maybe less trust worthy to leave any of your stuff while you take a dip, cause barcelona has a lot of pickpockets.

You only have to Travel a short while out (further north along the coast is the nudest beach) but there are more quiet ones surrounding there.

Its definitely a new experience to go to a city beach than a usual spanish beach, i would try it if i was you. There are other options if you ddon'tlike it.

I went to a place called STICHES or at least I think thats how its spelt. It is a nice spanish beach and not too many foreign louts to spoil it. They have good resturants and they have a few festivals there each year.
You can get to it by train about 20 minutes

We went to Barcelona in May 2008. We would not go back! it was ok, but we found it very like London, with sun and twice as expensive.
Any how we went to the beach in the city, it was dirty, crowded, and every 2mins someone was trying to sell you drugs, beer, or fags!

We stayed further along from the port, where the olympic village was, and the beaches there are alot cleaner, have a small bar on each beach, they are man-made tho, so no shells, or even seagulls, and drops to a deep level once in the sea, so not safe for children, there is absolutely nothing around that area, no bars, resturants, cafes, nothing its just a huge busy main road and newly built flats and a few hotels, one of which was ours. But it's too far from the city, you have to take the underground and walk etc, takes about 30 mins.
Personally Barcelona is not for going to the beach, and i would certainly not rush back there, the food was awful, people rude, and just too expensive. It has actually put me off spain all together.

I was there a year and a half ago. We thought it was fine. I'm not the biggest beach person, so I have little to compare it to.

I was told that the beaches are not natural, there...none of that area is. It was built for the Olympics, and has been maintained, but that it is not natural to have a sandy beach there...all the sand is imported from the Sahara!

Apart from that, one must remember that it is perfectly natural for people there to take their tops off. Unfortunately for most young men, it is NOT the young, beautiful women who do this, but sixty-plus year old women, you might think to be a bit more modest! My 8 year old got an education in European beach fashion! :) I warned him, and told him not to stare! He really did quite well.

I didn't find it terribly dirty...we swam at Barceloneta...the area specially built for the Olympics. There really is no swimming to be done at Port Vell...it is, after all, a port. And I never found that nude beach, but I have heard tell of it! If you really want prettier beaches, I would suggest one of the towns either north or south along the coast. I thought the little time we spent with our feet in the water at Tarragona was nice. That's about an hour south.
