I live in Barcelona, although I'm english. I came here 9 years ago as an english teacher and just ended up staying! I can reccomend it (not from a biased point of view) as a top city to visit in Spain as it has many attributes that other Spanish cities don't have. It's on the Mediterranean coast, but is flankeby two hills, so you have amazing scenery and views withing the same city. There are some great museums here (Chocolate, Picasso, Erotic (!) Modern Art) and some of the best architecture you will evr see - UNESO has voted 7 sights in Barcelona as World Heritage - more than any other European city. Not to mention the great food, the great nightlife and the mix of nationalities which make Barcelona different, too.

I've been there years ago during Christmas season. We had a hotel directly at the "Ramblas" and after arriving first day, totally tired, and slept out, we were that much disappointed seeing nobody on the streets at about 13:00 hours. Later on we found out that "siesta" is hold in Spain regardless of the time of the year. Three hours later, the roads were fully crowded, and what reminds me specially, contrary to Germany where on Christmas Eve the roads are empty, the people celebrated Christmas like a big festival on the streets.
All bars and restaurants were open and people celebrated together.
I'll never forget that adventure of returning back, especially as my diesel engine was frozen because of -20Â°C temperatures in Germany and Spanish Diesel fuel in the tank with any frost-protection.

Hmmm im not overly made up on Barcelona. For the simple fact im a big lover of Spain, and its people and its culture etc.

However......... in Barcelona, it doesnt feel like im in Spain. They want to be known as Catalan and not Spanish, and i think this contributes to it not feeling very Spanish compared to Madrid and Seville that i have been to. So its kinda what you want, if you want to feel like you are in a Spanish City go to Madrid, if you want it to be more like a general European city go to Barcelona.

It's great. I came to live here for one year, and three years later I'm still here. The lifestyle, weather, architecture, nightlife and locality to beaches, mountains, coastline all make Barcelona a great place to live or visit.
