Health care in Spain as a british citizen.? |
Hi,
I'm going to Spain for 12 months with my wife and children. I would like to know if we would be covered on the EHIC in case of an emergency?
I appreciate any advice you have to give.
Thank you for your time. |

E111 is not used anymore as it has been replaced by EHI card. Carrying an European Health Insurance card will give you free assistance at public health services in Spain.
If you are staying at the same place for one year, you should go to a regional health service site so that they provide you with their own card (also we Spanish have to do this every time we move to another region, city or even neighbourhood).
Anyway, in case of emergency we won't abandon you. While staying at Costa del Sol an old laidy fainted and her doughter was scared because didn't speak Spanish. I took them both to the local hospital and took care of her without asking. Anyway, you better speak Spanish because here down not everyone speak good English |

If you are working there and paying taxes you should get a SIP card (national health card) . Best to talk to a gestoria. They can arrange it all for you. You will have to pay for the service...but its worth it, otherwise you can run round in circles trying to sort it out. You will probably need proof of address and passport for each person, though the children will be dependants , but will still have their own cards. Probably best to find an English speaking gestoria in the area that you are going to first, as it probably varies in different areas. A gestoria can advise you about all sorts of legal queries.
Good Luck...and have a nice time. |

I hope to emigrate permanently to Spain soon so this is a topic of interest to me. I'm not sure but think you'll need an E form, there are three or four besides the E111, which is just for short holidays, (it might be E120, but check!).
There is .gov website which will help but I can't offer a link. |
