Some really good answers. Thought I'd just summarise. Costa Brava has it's places that you will enjoy if you are not looking for a family holiday, but a good time for late teens and twenties. It still has very beautiful parts and some quite unspoilt. It gets forgotten that the Costa Brava led the Package holiday boom because of it's very fine coast. A lot ruined by bad development.
However if you want a more relaxing holiday, and slightly warmer at the end of September try the Costa Blanca. You'll need to search a bit harder for a hotel because, apart from Benidorm and to a lesser extent Calpe, most towns do not have high rise hotels or apartments. Moraira is beautiful, with a building height restriction of 4 stories. Really nice but small beach, but at that time of year, no problem. Javea, is really nice as well. Denia is nice, where I live, but more of a little city and not nearly as pretty as Moraira or Javea.
However starting in Denia and going north to Oliva there is an unbroken beach, and as you get towards Denia it gets more and more beautiful. I just love it. And the great thing is, most of it is natural and not man made beach. Backed with natural sand dunes, and amazing vegitation. The sand is really golden and fine.
Just a thought. Of course there are many great parts of Spain including parts of the Costa Brava.
Wherever you go, enjoy |

Despite some anti-catalanistas, the Costa Brava is great. BUT only if you go north of Tossa.
Rosas, Ampurias, l'Escala, Cadaques, are all nice. Have a look at photos on the net and you will see what I mean. Look at Google earth. You can see if the sea is clean! and it is. |

Whilst part of the Costa Brava coastline leant itself to tourist developments on a very large scale other parts have retained a more traditional look and have become "hidden gems" for visitors who want a little more than sun, sand and sangria. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/Costa_Brava.htm for more details |

End of September is a bit cold and I wouldn't go back to Costa Brava, Blanes and Pineda are OK but none of them have nice beaches, If you've got to go there try Fannalls outside Llorett its a bit better. |

It's not exactly the nicest place to spend a holiday.
See what this lot thought of the place and you'll see what I mean. |

I enjoyed going to Tamariu-- it was very picturesque, though the beach was really small. It's a quieter town, so I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. We stayed for 4 nights during our honeymoon, and it was perfect. |

Why go to Costa Brava? There are plenty of nicer places in Spain. Costa del azahar, Costa de la luz, Costa blanca, Costa Dorada, lots. Do not go in July or August or you might not want to go back, ever. It depends as well of the kind of things you like. To me Costa Brava is related to partying at night, mass tourism, people drunk all over, plenty of expats, noise, over priced... but if this is what you like, you might find yourself in heaven!!!
I personally prefer to see some more cultural places, relaxing evenings, lovely walks near the sea, fair priced restaurants, and knowing that I will go to bed without hearing the screams or the fights of a drunk person in the street.
End of September will be good almost anywhere in Spain, as it would be back to the "low season" and hotel prices will drop by quite a lot. You can negociate the price or ask for bargains (i.e. free breakfast).
Whatever you do, enjoy yourself and please, respect my wonderful country. |
