Can't help you with Barcelona...we weren't too happy with the apartment we rented there...not terribly dangerous, but not exactly savory, either.
However, if you want to stay smack dab in the middle of Madrid, nice, not expensive, nothing de luxe, just a clean, decent room, here's a nice place. I chose it for location and price...http://www.hostalcruzsol.com
And you're just steps from the Puerta del Sol, too, if you're going to be there over New Years...that's where the action is. |

Hi, Barcelona is a safe city (just watch out for pickpockets) and I can recommend two reasonably priced hostels: one is in the city centre - www.hostalopera.com and the other is in Eixample just outside of the main city but still within walking distance - www.hotelfelipe2.com |
