Forget the text book renditions above just get on a plane in the winter months and sample the life to see if you like it first. Its quiet and more real life in the winter. GIve yourself six months renting a cheap apartment, by then you will be wise enough to make your own mind up on "how" and "why" you want to live in Spain with the rest of us foreigners.

in order to reside legally in Spain, you have to apply for a ´´ residence card´´, wether you are a student or a researcher. This card allows you to live in Spain and, in addition, travel within the European Union and those countries that have signed agreements with Spain or with the EU for the free movement of people.

You must apply for Residencia if you live in Spain for more than 183 days. The documents you will need when applying for Residencia are:

* Passport.
* Photographs.
* Proof of Monthly Income or Pension.
* Proof of Private Health Insurance or E121 Form.
What is a Spanish N.I.E. Number?

The N.I.E. is a foreigner's identification number. All foreigners living in Spain must apply for this identification number.
Non-EU citizens visiting Spain :need a visa (visado) in order to enter and visit Spain, unless there exists a special agreement between Spain and your home country; these countries are those of North & South America in addition to:

Andorra, Australia, Brunei, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Gibraltar, Grenada, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia and Switzerland.

If you are one of these nationalities, you can enter Spain without a visa and stay for up to 90 days in any 6-month period thats what I want to tell you.

What do you plan to do for a living? If you have an indespensible career, you can get a visa more easily. If you only want to go for a short time, here's a list of organizations that can help you get placed. A good agency will help you with all the paperwork, getting a job, and finding housing (that may mean they give you a list of places that are good and you go out and get things arranged on your own.) I don't know anything about any of these places, I cannot vouch for their quality, you'll have to decide for yourself how trustworthy they are, I only started the search for you....
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=slv8-hptb6&p=work%20in%20Spain&type=

Once there, you might be able to negotiate something more permanent, and by then you'll know how to get the paperwork done on your own.

¡Buena Suerte!

i live in Spain but I'm British, i don't need visa's or anything because I'm an EU citizen. I'm not 100% sure about an American living here but i do know loads that have moved here and i dont think they had any trouble. you certainly can stay for 6months with no visa etc... but on a long term basis (even for EU citizens) you have to sign up to the town hall and get yourself a N.I.F or N.I.E number. that is easy peezzy though :D you just turn up and they give it to you really. im so happy i moved to spain its an amazing place to live. oh and you need to learn the language and get a job, but if your rich enough then you dont need a job. plus its not like in america where you need someone to sponser you if you are a forigner trying to get a job. anyone can get whatever job they want in spain. email me if you would like extra help good luck

edit: not trying to pick but the guy above me is wrong. they dont only give you 3months to get a job at all. and i still havent applied for my N.I.F number (mainly because i was in school but my dad got one only because he started a business here but that was after 3years here already) and the resident thing he is talking about doesnt exsist anymore they scrapped that like 2years ago almost, you only need the N.I.F number (but its not taken very seriously, you need it to get a job though) most of the people i know move to Spain and dont get jobs (or even learn the language) keep in mind most the people here are retired and arent even signed into the town hall.
