How do people "work out" in Spain? Do they have gyms? |
I am studying abroad at la Universidad de Complutense en Madrid in the Spring, and I don't want to give up my cardio/strength training routine. Will there be somewhere for me to work out? Maybe even take a pilates or spinning class? Additional Details Sorry when I studied in Italy and Costa Rica none were close by. I didn't realize the question was offensive. I just wondered what kind of classes people took, or if most preferred to jog/bike outside. |

If you ask 100 Spaniards if they work out 95 will say, "Yes I work out. I walk every day." That's the general way most all Spaniards get exercise.
But in this new, hustle bustle world even fewer people have time to walk just to walk - unless they're going somewhere. Few people, except older retired persons, take evening strolls in the street.
Do people go to gyms? Sure! But not as commonly as in the USA. Gyms in Spain are fewer and farther between, that's for sure, but there are some great, large, modern gyms which are every bit as good as the gyms I'd attended in the USA. My gym (nowhere near Complutense) has spinning, pilates, dancing, and other kinds of classes as well as the usual electronic machines (bikes, treadmills, elliptical), free weights, and weight machines. There are also a number of tiny, hole-in-the-wall gyms which have nothing more than a room full of aged free-weights. I don't like these gyms at all.
Madrid has some big gyms too. Ask around where you live and certainly someone will be able to point you in the right direction.
Good luck with your study-abroad!

Of course we have gyms some with very sophisticated machines.
This is Europe, what do you think we are like here?
Even where I live in the once forgotten province of Spain and in a small costal village we have at least three gyms of different sorts. |

Spain has the best diets in Europe, some of the best wines, best people and certainly some of the most modern gyms in the world.
Here on the costa they have no end of place to go, I should imagine in Madrid they might be even better, as here on the costa folks tend to jog/run/power walk etc., in the good weather, then go for a beer and tapas! |

there are plenty of gyms in every barrio and i'm sure you will find something to suit your tastes. there is fitness first too. If you have fitness first in your own country join up and pay the extra to use all gyms worldwide. |

ask around there has to be a gym somewhere close by, there are gyms in almost every country in the world unless you live in an out of the way place. |

Yes, we're a developed country, you know.
Sorry, but honestly, this question seems to be more typical from a illiterate than from a university student. Do we have gyms???? is it a joke???? lol |

I live in a small city in southern Spain. They do have gyms just like in the states, however, I don't know how popular pilates and spinning classes are. This is something you would have to take up with gym management. |

No, we climb up the trees and jump over the cars and buses...
Apart from the joke, there are plenty of gyms where you would be able to do whatever you want/need.
Anyway, welcome to Madrid and have a nice staying. |

"Sorry when I studied in Italy and Costa Rica none were close by."
I've never been to Italy or Costa Rica but I'd obviously take for granted that there are gyms there, at least in the cities. Now, if you want Gyms to be located round the corner of your house so life becomes more comfortable to you.... move your ***, walk the streets, and find one yourself. That's a good cardio exercise. |

They get their work out by getting chased by a bull in the streets after a good night's drinking.
Well, once a year anyways.
Good luck on your trip. |
