How far is it from barcelona (city) to the coast and which is the best place to find work?

I want to get summer work and stay out for the season, I'm doing Spanish GCSE in May and will do a 2wk course in Barcelona and stay at the school accomodation in the centre of Barcelona for the 2 months (July & Aug). Just wondering how far it is from the centre to the beaches and is the centre a good location to find casual work e.g. bar, waiting, maybe call-centre work. Btw, I speak no Catalan but I heard that isn't a problem, Spanish (Castillian) is the one you need.

Barcelona city centre is quite big. Generally you could reach the beaches with a 15-20 min walk. By the way, I suggest you to look on the website of Barcelona's public transportation (www.tmb.es): there is a very useful tool that tells you how long will it take to reach any destination.

Everybody there will understand you if you speak Spanish (even if their primary language is Catalan and so posters, tickets and so on are written in that language)

have fun!!!!

Barcelona goes right to the coast.

and if you are a student, and NOT from an EU country, you can't work on a student/tourist visa.

The center - el casco central, el BarrĂ Gotic, where the Cathedral is, is about a twenty minute walk to the coast. About ten minutes on the subway, including waiting for a train.

Catalán is not necessary to get along...everyone speaks Spanish. I never ran into a single person in ten days that didn't. Although a few helped me out with a few phrases in Catalá. You'll pick some up. You'll need to understand to read the street signs, but you'll pick it up instantly. Pretty simple, really, if you already know Spanish.

Barcelona city centre is large. Depending which part of the city you will be in, most places will be within reasonable walking distance (15 - 30 mins) of the beach. Alternatively the public transport system is very efficient and cheap.

Barcelona city do is in the coast.

Barcelona is on the coast.

I think you might have been misinformed - the language the locals use is not Spanish but Catalan, so I would recommend going further down the coast to where Spanish is spoken.

Yes everyone can speak Castellano... so you'll be understood... in Barça many many people can speak English...

I think the unlimited Metro and Auto-Bus card is called the T10 in Barça ??

But it depends on your location... I would have said Barça City Center is plaça d Catalunya.... and the main beach would be Barceloneta platja ?? it is under 4km distance =) have fun - but keep your belonging safe on the metro =P

Barcelona is a port city. With a huge beach resort area. If you are in Barcelona, you'll be right on the coast.

I wonder why you think that is the best place to find work? It would seem to me that in a big city like Barcelona, work would be available for those with proper papers. At least, inasmuch as there is terrible unemployment in Spain right at the moment.

Barcelona sits on the coast and as for work in this present economic climate is near impossible,
