How is Spanish different from Catalan?

Is Catalan a language or a dialect?
Additional Details
Can you give me an example, like a sentence in both Spanish and Catalan? Thanks! :)

Catalan is a language that is similar to Spanish, French and even Italian.
It's spoken in Catalonia, Valencian Community (called Valencian instead of Catalan, and it has some different words and accent), the Balearic Islands, the small comarca (county) of "el Carche" in the community of Murcia, and some towns of Aragon near the frontier with Catalonia.
Spanish and Catalan are co-official in those regions (except Aragon and Murcia that is not official and not widespread)
In Valencia they consider "Valencian" a dialect of Catalan, and in the Balearic Islands they consider "Balearic" a dialect as well. But now the still haven't got this recognition.

SPANISH - Me voy a Lérida (I go to Lérida)

CATALAN - Em baig a Lleida

I'm spanish but not from Cataluña, so I don't speak Catalán, but I assure you it is a language, Gallego is another one and Euskera anotheCatalán and spanish are similar but they are different languages. Is not an opinion, it is consider like that.

Catalan is a language spoken by people who live in the province of Cataluna, which includes Barcelona(. I know Castillian (the national language of Spain) yet i can only pick up a few words when I hear Catalan. It is very different than Castillian. Don't worry if you are going to Barcelona and you don't know Catalan because everyone is required to learn Castillian in school in addition to two other languages, so you shouldn't have any problems communicating.

catalan is a language... quite different from spanish but not a lot... it isnt as old as spanish language so we could say its a mixture between spanish nd french... it's only spoken in catalonia nd valencia... catalan comes from aragonian dialect, which was used in the aragon crown.

Està molt be, però penso que algunes frases estan mal traduïdes <--- its catalan
Està muy bien, pero pienso que algunas frases estan mal traducidas.<---- its spanish

Catalan is a dialect of Languedoc (southern French) and Castellano (Spanish). That means that if you know either of those languages, you should be able to figure out Catalán, without lessons, though you probably won't be able to actually SPEAK Catalán, unless you actually LEARN it.

I don't know enough Catalán to be able to form a sentence. I speak French, and Spanish, and can figure things out. But I can't actually form a sentence.

But, for instance,
Catalunya (Cat.) = Cataluña (Sp)
Carrer = Calle
Avinguda = Avenida
Espanyol = español
Plaça = plaza
Vell = viejo
Nou = nuevo

You can pick up a lot in a couple of days traveling. A couple of the websites that I found trying to plan my trip were not translated from catalan, and I managed to figure out what I needed to, for the most part.

Im sure that's a dialect.
